The verdict

Choose Como if you want warmer, sunnier days and a base for day trips, with 8 UNESCO-listed places within reach and a small centre rather than a city one.

Choose Strasbourg if the trip is about eating and walking: many more restaurants and kitchens, most of what there is to see within walking distance, plus parks, a theme park and more protected land around it.

Where they differ

Como's advantage is what lies outside it: 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Strasbourg's 1, and warmer, sunnier days, with highs of 7-27°C across the year against 5-26°C.

Strasbourg is the stronger city visit. It has about three times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, many times as many notable places within walking distance, more attractions near the centre for families, a theme park where Como has none, and 37% protected land around it against 23%.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Both have a few places to bathe nearby, 8 around Como and 9 around Strasbourg, but neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more.

Both run the same shape of year, warmest at 26-27°C and coolest at 5-7°C. Both carry real heritage, Strasbourg in the number of its museums, Como in the UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and the two countries' estimated daily budgets sit close together.

Which traveller are you?

A traveller who plans days around eating and drinking should take Strasbourg: many more restaurants near the centre, a wider range of kitchens, more places to drink and far more clubs, most of them close in.

Families are better served in Strasbourg too, with more attractions near the centre, far more park space within walking distance and 1 theme park within reach where Como has none.

Anyone travelling for warmth, walking and heritage outside the city should look at Como: highs of 7-27°C across the year, more sun than Strasbourg, and UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €155 for Italy and €160 for France, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of Como or Strasbourg. The gap between them is small, and a single visited town can sit further from its own country's average than that, so treat them as background rather than a reason to pick one.

Both places list beaches nearby, yet neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, so those counts do not add up to a swimming holiday. In Como's case the warmest months are also the wettest of the two.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Como: 1991-2020 normals, Lugano (23 km from centre). Strasbourg: 1991-2020 normals, Strasbourg (9.1 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Como is at its best from June to August, with highs of 25-27°C, and it stays the warmer of the two through the cold months. Rain is the trade: every month from May onwards brings 150-178mm.

Strasbourg's window is wider, April to September, when highs run 17-26°C and rainfall stays at 42-77mm, well under half Como's. January to March are drier still at 34-39mm, but cold, with highs of 5-12°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
