The verdict

Choose Como for the warmer, sunnier year, a centre small enough to cross on foot, and 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach; it suits a slow, short stay rather than a packed itinerary.

Choose Stuttgart for range: many times more museums, a far wider choice of places to eat and drink, protected countryside and parks close to hand, and 2 theme parks. It is the easier city with children.

Where they differ

Como runs a little warmer, with highs of 7-27°C against 6-26°C, and more sunshine. It has 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Stuttgart's 3, and its museums sit tightly around the centre.

Stuttgart is the better base for the outdoors, with about half the land around it protected against roughly a quarter around Como, and much more park space near the centre. It has twice as many restaurants, a wider choice of kitchens, twice as many attractions near the centre, and 2 theme parks where Como has none.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Como has 8 beaches nearby and Stuttgart 3, but neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, so water is incidental to either trip.

Elsewhere they run close. Daytime highs track each other across the year, both keep their museums within walking reach of the centre, and the national budget estimates behind them, €155 and €163, are near enough to make no practical difference.

Which traveller are you?

A couple wanting a slow week: Como. The centre is compact, summer highs reach 27°C, and 8 UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach, more than Stuttgart can offer.

Families with children: Stuttgart, which has twice as many attractions near the centre, far more park space close in, and 2 theme parks within reach where Como has none.

Anyone planning a trip around eating and going out: Stuttgart, with about twice as many restaurants near the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, twice as many places to drink and many more clubs, most of them central.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €155 and €163, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel prices, not measurements of either city. A lakeside town and a large industrial city can both sit well off their country's average, by more than the gap between the two, so this says nothing about which trip will cost you more.

Como's warmest months are also its wettest: rain runs at 158-178mm from May through September, so the good-weather window and the rain arrive together. And while Como has more beaches, neither city has a month of sea at 21°C or more.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Como: 1991-2020 normals, Lugano (23 km from centre). Stuttgart: 1991-2020 normals, Stuttgart / Neckartal (2.8 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Como is at its best from June to September, with 27°C in July and August and 22°C in September, though summer rain is persistent at 158-172mm a month. February and March are drier at 61-76mm, but cool at 9-14°C.

Stuttgart's usable window is wider. April already reaches 16°C on 37mm of rain, and June to August holds 24-26°C with 63-79mm, well under Como's summer totals. November to February stays at 6-10°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
