Choose Hamburg if day trips out of the city matter more, with 14% of the surrounding land protected, and if clubs rather than bars shape your evenings.

Where they differ
Copenhagen packs about twice as many notable places into walking distance of the centre, and its museums sit tightly around it, with 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Hamburg's 1. It also has more park space and more attractions near the centre for families, 2 theme parks against 1, and 17 beaches, with the sea reaching 18°C at its warmest.
Hamburg has the greener surroundings, 14% of the land around it protected against 5% around Copenhagen, and about twice as many nightclubs, most of them close to the centre.
Where they are alike
Eating out is the closest call. Each has a similar number of restaurants near the centre and a comparable range of kitchens, so neither city will feel narrower than the other over a few days of meals.
The weather runs on much the same curve too, daytime highs of about 4-23°C across the year in both. Nightlife is close too: both have a similar number of places to drink, so the difference is in the clubs rather than the bars.
Which traveller are you?
A culture-led weekend suits Copenhagen. Its notable places and museums sit tightly around the centre, so more can be seen on foot, and there are 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Hamburg's 1.
Families also lean to Copenhagen, which has more park space and more attractions near the centre, 2 theme parks within reach against 1, and beaches where the sea reaches 18°C in late summer.
Anyone building the trip around clubs and countryside is better off in Hamburg, with about twice as many nightclubs, most of them central, and 14% of the surrounding land protected for walks out of the city.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €214 for Denmark and €163 for Germany, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels rather than measurements of either city. A capital or a heavily visited city can sit well away from its own country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so they do not tell you which trip costs more.
No nearby station records sunshine hours for Copenhagen, so that side of the weather comparison is unmeasured rather than poor. Its beach advantage also rests on a short window: neither city has a month with the sea at 21°C or more.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Copenhagen: 1991-2020 normals, Koebenhavn / Landbohoejskolen (2.4 km from centre). Hamburg: 1991-2020 normals, Hamburg Airport (9.3 km from centre).
Copenhagen is at its best in July and August, July reaching 23°C and the sea peaking at 18°C. Its spring is the drier of the two: March and April see 28-30mm of rain, where Hamburg sees 39-57mm, and the same pattern holds through winter.
Hamburg's best window is the same pair of summer months, also at 23°C, but wetter, 77-82mm against Copenhagen's 59-74mm. April, warmer there, is the one month it edges ahead.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
