The verdict
Choose Aarhus if the water matters most: the sea starts at the centre, 28 beaches lie within reach, and the compact core means less ground to cover.
Choose Copenhagen for almost everything else, from museums and notable places within walking distance to a wider choice of restaurants and bars, more park space and two theme parks within reach for children.

Where they differ
Aarhus is the better base for the water: the sea is 0km from its centre against 1km in Copenhagen, and it has 28 beaches nearby against 17. Its bars are concentrated near the centre, so an evening out means less travelling.
Copenhagen has far more museums and 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach where Aarhus has none. It also holds many times as many notable places within walking distance, many times as many attractions aimed at visitors, twice the central park space, and 2 theme parks against Aarhus's 1.
Where they are alike
Their weather is close to identical. Both climb to 22-23°C at the July peak, and both get a drier spell in late winter and early spring before the wetter second half of the year.
Swimming works the same way in both: the sea is at or beside the centre, warmest in August at 18°C, and neither reaches 21°C in any month. Both carry the same national price level, which is set nationally rather than measured city by city.
Which traveller are you?
Families with children should take Copenhagen, where there are many times as many attractions near the centre, roughly twice the park space, and 2 theme parks within reach against Aarhus's 1.
Sea swimmers and anyone who wants the water close will prefer Aarhus, where the sea starts at the centre and 28 beaches lie nearby, at their best in July and August.
For a culture and nightlife weekend, Copenhagen answers better, with far more museums, 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and many more bars and clubs, though those are spread more widely than Aarhus's central cluster.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value figure is a national price level, identical for the two by construction. It carries no information about which of these cities is cheaper, and the daily budget of about €214 beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either place.
No weather station near either city records sunshine hours, so that figure is missing rather than low, and the monthly picture rests on temperature, rainfall and sea temperature alone. The warm months are also the wettest, with 74mm in August in both, and Aarhus's 28 beaches sit beside a sea that never reaches 21°C.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Aarhus: 1991-2020 normals, Tirstrup (29.8 km from centre). Copenhagen: 1991-2020 normals, Koebenhavn / Landbohoejskolen (2.4 km from centre).
Aarhus is worth the trip in July and August, when highs sit at 21-22°C and the sea reaches 18°C. August is the wettest month of the year at 74mm against July's 62mm, so July is the steadier bet.
Copenhagen holds a slight edge either side of that, warmer in July at 23°C and drier through spring, with 28mm in April against Aarhus's 33mm. September stays mild in both, though wetter. November to February is cold in either, with highs of 4-5°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
