The verdict
Choose Cork if you want a small city where the centre is walkable end to end, the few museums sit close together, and quiet evenings suit you better than a wide choice of bars.
Choose Liverpool if you want range: 34 beaches within reach, 3 theme parks, more museums, and far more places to eat and drink, plus highs of 21°C at the peak of summer.

Where they differ
Cork's advantages are narrow. It comes out marginally ahead on value for money, and the heritage it does have is packed tightly around the centre, so a short visit covers most of it on foot in a city of 222,000 people.
Liverpool leads on nearly everything else. The sea is 2km from the centre, there are 34 beaches nearby against Cork's single one, roughly three times as many tourist attractions near the centre, 3 theme parks within reach, and many more notable places within walking distance.
Where they are alike
Value for money is the axis where they sit closest. What each returns for the money is much the same, and neither pulls clearly ahead of the other.
Weather and day trips are close too. Both are cool and damp through the year, with summer highs of 19-21°C and no month at 40mm of rain or less, and both put parks and open country within easy reach of the centre, Liverpool with roughly twice the park space.
Which traveller are you?
Families with children should go to Liverpool. It has around three times as many tourist attractions near the centre, twice as much park space, 3 theme parks within reach, and 34 beaches, none of which Cork can match.
Anyone planning around eating and evenings out will also find Liverpool the fuller option, with about twice as many restaurants near the centre and roughly three times as many places to drink, most of them walkable.
Cork suits a traveller who wants a small, low-key base. Its museums are few but tightly grouped, countryside and coast are close, and it holds a slight edge on value for money.
What the numbers don't tell you
There is no daily budget figure for Liverpool in this data, only for Cork, at about €187. The two therefore cannot be ranked against each other on price at all; the value comparison here rests on a different measure that both cities do have, so read it as that and nothing more.
Liverpool's beach advantage is real in count but not in swimming conditions. Neither city has a month with sea at 21°C or above, and the warmest either manages is 17°C in August. For much of the year those beaches are for walking rather than bathing.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Cork: 1991-2020 normals, Cork Airport (5.6 km from centre). Liverpool: 1991-2020 normals, Manchester Airport (47.4 km from centre).
Cork is at its best in July and August, with highs of 19°C and sea at 16°C, though the rain persists: its driest month still brings 78mm, and October 140mm.
Liverpool is drier in every month and warmer at the peak, reaching 21°C in high summer with 60mm of rain. Spring is where they part company: March here is nearer 51mm, so an early-season trip is less likely to be washed out, and the warm stretch starts sooner.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it.
