The verdict

Choose Dresden if you want the warmer end of the two, with highs reaching 26°C in July, milder spring days and a wider range of kitchens to work through.

Choose Krakow if museums and heritage drive the trip: more of them, tightly grouped, with four UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, plus more to do with children and a livelier evening scene.

Where they differ

Dresden runs warmer through the year, with daytime highs of 4-26°C against Krakow's 2-25°C, and it covers a somewhat wider range of kitchens. It also has more beach spots within reach, though neither is a swimming destination.

Krakow packs more into its centre: about twice as many notable places within walking distance, about twice as many restaurants, and more museums, grouped closer together. Four UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach against one for Dresden. The national daily estimate is €133 for Poland and €163 for Germany.

Where they are alike

Neither city is a place to swim. Dresden has 22 beaches nearby and Krakow 9, but neither records a month of water at 21°C or more, so swimming sits at the edge of either trip.

The two also sit close on climate and open space: cool winters, warm summers and a handful of drier months at 40mm of rain or less in both, 14% of the land around each protected, and similar park space near the centre.

Which traveller are you?

A traveller going for museums and old streets should take Krakow: more museums, packed tightly around the centre, about twice as many notable places within walking distance, and four UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against one for Dresden.

Families also lean towards Krakow, with roughly twice as many attractions near the centre and 4 theme parks within reach against Dresden's 2, though park space near the centre is much the same in both.

Anyone travelling for food and milder weather rather than sightseeing volume will do better in Dresden: warmer days across the year, up to 26°C in July, and a wider range of kitchens, if fewer restaurants and fewer bars.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €163 and €133, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either city. A heavily visited city can sit far from its country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so neither tells you what your trip will cost.

The weather side is incomplete too: no station near Krakow reports sunshine hours, so that measure is missing rather than low, and its monthly ratings rest on temperature and rainfall alone. The warmest months are also the wettest in both, with Krakow's peak at 100mm, so a well-rated summer month is not a dry one.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Dresden: 1991-2020 normals, Dresden-Strehlen (3.8 km from centre). Krakow: 1991-2020 normals, Krakow (10.1 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Dresden suits the shoulder months. April and May bring highs of 17-21°C and less rain than Krakow gets at the same time, 64mm in May against 79mm, and it holds a slight temperature edge through midsummer as well.

Krakow is at its strongest in August, warm at 25°C and drier than its own July, the wettest month of its year at 100mm. Early autumn suits both, though Krakow carries more rain into September; winter is cold in both and the weaker part of the year.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
