The verdict

Choose Dresden if the trip is mostly about what lies outside the city: 14% of the surrounding land is protected against 4% around Vienna, and dry months are more common.

Choose Vienna if you want the museums, the eating and the late nights close together, with about three times as much of each within walking distance of the centre.

Where they differ

Dresden is the better base for leaving the city behind: 14% of the land around it is protected against 4% around Vienna. Its bars and clubs sit almost entirely near the centre, and it has more months under 40mm of rain.

Vienna has about three times as many museums, and 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Dresden's 1. Restaurants near the centre are about three times as numerous, and there are far more places to drink, with notable sights packed more tightly around the centre.

Where they are alike

Neither city is a place to swim: both count 22 beaches within reach, but neither has a month with water at 21°C or more, so a dip is incidental rather than a reason to go.

They also land close on cost and climate. The national daily budget estimates are €163 for Germany and €160 for Austria. Both run daytime highs of about 4-26°C across the year, with July the warmest month in each and January the coolest.

Which traveller are you?

A traveller who wants museums and monuments in one walkable stretch should take Vienna, which has many more museums than Dresden and a much denser cluster of notable places around the centre, with the eating to match.

Anyone whose week is built around walking and day trips out of town is better served by Dresden, where 14% of the surrounding land is protected against 4% around Vienna, though Vienna has somewhat more park space near its centre.

Families get more ready-made days in Vienna: more tourist attractions and park space near the centre, and 4 theme parks within reach against Dresden's 2.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figure is a national estimate, the price level for restaurants and hotels in Germany at €163 and Austria at €160. It cannot see how far a capital or a heavily visited city sits from its own country average, and that difference can be larger than the gap between the two figures, so neither city can be called the cheaper trip on this evidence.

The best-rated months are also the wettest in both, with July and August at 71-83mm, and Vienna's larger nightlife is spread wider, with about half its clubs near the centre against most of Dresden's.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Dresden: 1991-2020 normals, Dresden-Strehlen (3.8 km from centre). Vienna: 1991-2020 normals, Wien / Hohe Warte (4.7 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Dresden's edge falls either side of high summer. May reaches 21°C with 64mm of rain against Vienna's 80mm, and September holds the same warmth with 55mm against 64mm, so the shoulder months are the drier choice here.

Vienna is the better pick at the peak: July and August reach 27°C against Dresden's 26°C, and are drier with 71-78mm against 80-83mm. Both are thin in winter, with January highs of 3-4°C and little to draw you outdoors.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
