The verdict

Choose Dubrovnik if the trip is built around swimming. The sea is at the edge of the centre and there are 43 beaches to choose between, against a handful in Thessaloniki.

Choose Thessaloniki if you want the evenings to matter and the days to reach beyond the city: far more bars and clubs, more to walk to in the centre, and 25% of the land around it protected.

Where they differ

Dubrovnik is the stronger swimming base: 43 beaches nearby against Thessaloniki's 4, with water at the edge of both centres. Its drinking places are few, but almost all sit near the old centre.

Thessaloniki has many times as many bars and nightclubs, about half of them central, and roughly twice as many notable places within walking distance of the centre. Its surroundings are greener too: 25% of the land is protected against 4% around Dubrovnik, with far more park space near the centre.

Where they are alike

Heritage is where the two are level. Thessaloniki has about twice as many museums, while Dubrovnik has 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Thessaloniki's 1, so the depth is comparable even though it arrives differently.

Weather and cost sit close as well. January is the coolest month in both, at 11°C in Dubrovnik and 10°C in Thessaloniki, both pass 2400 hours of sunshine a year, and the two national price levels behind them are similar.

Which traveller are you?

Someone whose holiday is mostly sea and swimming should take Dubrovnik: 43 beaches near a waterfront centre, and 5 months when the sea holds 21°C or more.

Anyone travelling for the evenings and for eating out belongs in Thessaloniki: many times as many bars and clubs, about three times as many restaurants near the centre, and twice as much to walk to.

Families and walkers do better in Thessaloniki, with more attractions near the centre, far more park space and 25% of the surrounding land protected; both have 1 theme park, so that is not a deciding factor.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget is a national estimate, the price level for restaurants and hotels in Croatia and Greece, at €138 and €125. It is not a measurement of either city, and a small town under heavy visitation can sit a long way from its own country's average, so the gap between the two figures says nothing about what either trip will cost.

Dubrovnik's 43 beaches belong to a town of 41,600 residents, and they are busiest in exactly the months its weather peaks. Stepping outside that window means autumn and winter, which are also its wettest.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Dubrovnik: 1999-2020 (sunshine 1991-2020, rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Dubrovnik / Cilipi (15.3 km from centre). Thessaloniki: 1991-2020 normals, Thessaloniki Airport (14 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Dubrovnik is at its best from June to August: highs of 26-29°C, sea of 23-26°C and its driest stretch, 54-71mm a month. September still swims at 24°C but rain is back at 143mm, and late autumn runs to 198mm.

Thessaloniki's good window is wider: May, June and September, when highs sit near 25-27°C and the sea holds 19-25°C. July and August reach 32°C, hot but dry, since no month exceeds 56mm and most summer months stay near 21-30mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-09, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
