Where they differ

Faro is the better base for heading out of town: 11% of the land around it is protected against 7% around Malaga, and it has 2 theme parks within reach where Malaga has none.

Malaga has about three times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, many times as many museums, and 1 UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach. Bars and clubs outnumber Faro's many times over, and about twice as many notable places sit within walking distance of the centre.

Where they are alike

Weather is where the two are closest. Both stay mild in winter, with midwinter highs of 16°C in Faro and 17°C in Malaga, and both run long, sunny summers.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €109 and €122, are national estimates for the two countries, not measurements of Faro or Malaga. A heavily visited coastal city can sit well above its own country's average, by more than the gap between these two figures, so they say little about what either trip will cost.

The beach and weather figures hide the season. Malaga's warmest sea comes in high summer, when daytime highs reach 32°C and the coast is at its busiest, and the driest months are the same ones. Faro's dry summer is balanced by 102mm at the turn of the year.

Faro's best stretch runs from June to September, with highs of 27-29°C and a sea warm enough to swim in. It is also the gentler of the two at the peak, where Malaga reaches 32°C.

Malaga makes more sense in April and October, slightly warmer then, 22°C and 24°C, and it is the drier of the two at the turn of the year, 88mm against 102mm. Faro takes that back in February and March, when Malaga sees more rain.
