Where they differ
Faro is the warmer, drier base: daytime highs of 16-29°C across the year against Porto's 14-25°C, and twice as many months at 40mm of rain or less. More of the surrounding land is protected, 11% against 7%, so there is more open country to aim at.
Porto is where the town itself carries the trip: many times as many museums as Faro, three UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach where Faro has none, and many times as many notable sights within walking distance. Bars and clubs outnumber Faro's several times over too.
Where they are alike
Both are coastal in practice: Faro's centre sits on the water, Porto's is 3km from it, and between 52 beaches near Porto and 13 near Faro neither leaves you short of somewhere to swim.
They also share a dry-summer, wet-winter pattern, and in each the places to eat and drink cluster near the centre rather than spreading across the city, which keeps an evening walkable in both.
Which traveller are you?
Sun-first travellers should take Faro. The sea starts at the edge of the centre, three months run at 21°C or more, and midsummer is close to rainless, so beach days rarely need rearranging.
Anyone who wants to be occupied indoors, and out late, wants Porto: many times as many museums and bars as Faro, three UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and most of the notable sights close enough to walk between.
Families are better served in Porto, where attractions near the centre are many times more numerous, though Faro counters with 2 theme parks against 1, similar park space and warmer water for children who swim.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value comparison between these two carries no information: it is a national price level, identical for both by construction. The €109 daily budget is that same national estimate rather than a measurement of Faro or Porto.
Porto's beach standing sits close to Faro's, but the sea there never passes 17°C and the coast is 3km from the centre, so beaches nearby does not mean swimming. Faro's best-rated months are its driest and warmest, which are also the weeks when a town of 64,600 people carries its heaviest visitor load.
When should you go?

Faro works from May to October. Midsummer highs of 29°C come with just 1-6mm of rain, and the sea holds 21-22°C into the autumn, which keeps the shoulder months usable.
Porto is at its best in July and August, when highs reach 25°C and rain falls back to 22-33mm. Either side of that it turns wet quickly: by late autumn Porto takes 158-181mm a month against Faro's 57-102mm, and its sea never warms enough for casual swimming.
