The verdict
Choose Faro if the sea is the point: 13 beaches within reach, three months when it is warm enough to swim without thinking about it, and summers that stay well below Seville's peak heat.
Choose Seville if the city itself is the trip: many times as many museums, bars and clubs, a UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach, and most of the notable buildings within walking distance of the centre.

Where they differ
Faro is the one with a coast: 13 beaches nearby against Seville's 2, and three months when the sea reaches 21°C or more, which Seville never manages. More of the land around it is protected, 11% against 8%.
Seville has many times as many museums as Faro, plus a UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach where Faro has none. Its bars and nightclubs outnumber Faro's several times over, most of them near the centre, and there are far more restaurants there too.
Where they are alike
Both sit in countries whose estimated daily budgets are close, €109 for Portugal against €122 for Spain. These are national price levels rather than city measurements, so on that basis neither trip starts from a very different place.
Their weather tracks alike at the extremes: winter highs of 16°C in both, and a high summer that dries out almost entirely, down to 1mm of rain. Both also have protected countryside and city parks within easy reach.
Which traveller are you?
Swimmers and beach-first travellers should take Faro: 13 beaches nearby against Seville's 2, and three months of sea at 21°C or more, a season Seville cannot offer at all.
City breakers after museums, bars and late nights should take Seville: many times as many museums and drinking places, a UNESCO-listed site within day-trip reach, and enough notable buildings close together to fill a weekend on foot.
Families are better served in Seville, with far more attractions near the centre and about twice the park space, though both have 2 theme parks within reach and Faro's summers are less punishing.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €109 for Portugal and €122 for Spain, are national price levels, not measurements of Faro or Seville. A large, heavily visited city can sit well away from its own country's average, by more than the gap between these two figures, so they cannot tell you which of the two costs more on the ground.
Faro's coast and Seville's weather both read better across the year than in midsummer: Faro's warmest sea arrives in the busiest weeks, and Seville's highs of 36°C come with no sea nearby. Both turn wet late in the year, Faro reaching 102mm.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Faro: 1991-2020 normals, Faro / Aeroporto (2.8 km from centre). Seville: 1991-2020 normals, Sevilla / San Pablo (8.1 km from centre).
Faro's warm window runs long, May to September, with daytime highs of 24-29°C and the sea at its warmest, 22°C, in August. High summer is close to rainless. The wet stretch sits at the end of the year, 102mm in December.
Seville is better in spring, April and May at 24-28°C, before midsummer highs of 36°C with no sea to cool off in. Autumn works too, though October carries 74mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
