Florence or Interlaken?

Neither is a beach destination, but in summer Interlaken lets you swim without leaving the valley. Lake Thun warms to about 21°C in a good year and has grassy lidos at Neuhaus. Glacial Lake Brienz is colder but beautiful, with a bathing area at Bönigen.

Florence's nearest water is the sandy Versilia coast, about an hour and a half away by train. That takes a full day, so in the city a hotel or public pool is the realistic way to cool off.

Florence is the far better place to eat. You can have bistecca, ribollita and lampredotto from a street cart, browse the Mercato Centrale and Sant'Ambrogio, and drink Chianti Classico from the vineyards just south of town. The best meals are in the family trattorie around Santo Spirito.

Interlaken's restaurants serve dependable fondue, rösti and international dishes to a passing crowd, with little you would remember. The good moments come from mountain dairy cheese or lunch on a hut terrace. Many visitors live on picnics from the supermarket.

The gap here is about as wide as it gets. Florence holds Brunelleschi's dome, Botticelli and Leonardo in the Uffizi, Michelangelo's David, the Fra Angelico cells at San Marco and the Brancacci Chapel, all close together in the centre and enough to fill a week.

Interlaken grew up as a base for the mountains, and its sights are the hotel front on the Höheweg and a few old timber houses in Unterseen. For history and art you take the train to Bern.

Florence has the livelier evenings, though nobody comes to either town for clubbing. Here a night means aperitivo, then wine bars and crowds with drinks in hand around Piazza Santo Spirito and Sant'Ambrogio, with outdoor bars along the Arno in summer.

Interlaken goes to bed early because its visitors are up for the first trains and paragliding flights. You get a few backpacker pubs and basement clubs, the casino in the Kursaal, and quiet streets well before midnight.

The landscape around Florence is gentle and lived-in, while Interlaken's is wild and far bigger. Outside Florence the land has been worked for centuries: olive groves on the climb to Fiesole, vineyards and cypress avenues across Chianti, with the forests of the Casentino and the marble Apuan Alps for anyone willing to travel further. It is lovely for half-day walks and rides between villages, but you are rarely far from a farmhouse or a road, and the summer heat cuts the hiking season short.

Around Interlaken the scale changes completely. Within an hour by rail you are under the walls of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, looking up at waterfalls pouring off the cliffs of the Lauterbrunnen valley, or out on ridge trails from Schynige Platte and Grindelwald First, and the Jungfraujoch takes you to 3,454m above the Aletsch glacier. This is real high-mountain country, and the only thing that spoils it is low cloud hiding the peaks.

Both make good bases, but Florence has more major destinations nearby. Siena, Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano and the Val d'Orcia towns are all within reach, and Bologna is under forty minutes by fast train. You could fill a week without repeating yourself.

From Interlaken the outings are smaller towns and lakes rather than great art cities. Bern is under an hour away, and Thun, the castles at Spiez and Oberhofen, the Ballenberg open-air museum and Lucerne over the Brünig Pass round out the list.

Interlaken suits children better because the day's transport is half the fun. Rack railways, gondolas and steamers lead to summit playgrounds, cliff walks and summer toboggan runs, and the St Beatus caves and the farm animals at Ballenberg are reliable hits. Wet days and very high altitudes are its weak points.

Florence welcomes children, but its treasures are made for adults. Climbing the dome, the secret-passage tours of Palazzo Vecchio and the Boboli Gardens help, while narrow pavements and the heat of July and August make it harder going.

Both are easy to get around, but in different ways. In Florence you mostly walk. The Duomo, Uffizi, Ponte Vecchio and Pitti are minutes apart, there's no metro, and a car is a nuisance inside the restricted centre.

Interlaken itself is a small flat strip, so its strength is the wider network. Mainline trains, mountain railways, cog lines, gondolas and lake steamers connect so well that you can explore the whole Jungfrau region without a car.

Florence is much the better place to shop, especially for crafts. Look for leather from workshops and the San Lorenzo stalls, marbled paper, the goldsmiths on the Ponte Vecchio, the gilders of the Oltrarno, the antique dealers of Via Maggio and luxury fashion on Via de' Tornabuoni.

Interlaken's Höheweg sells watches, army knives, cuckoo clocks and chocolate to tour groups, plus outdoor gear. Woodcarving from Brienz is the one local craft worth buying.

Neither is cheap, but Florence is much easier on the budget. Central hotels and museum tickets add up, yet street lampredotto, market lunches, cheap house wine and a walkable centre keep the daily cost down.

In Interlaken, everything is priced at full Swiss rates, and the mountain railways that are the point of the trip cost the most, the Jungfraujoch above all. Passes, hostels and picnics help, but there's no cheap way to see the region properly.

Florence has the real classical scene. Opera was born here, the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino stages opera and ballet through the season, and its spring festival is among Europe's oldest. Most visitors still end up at church concerts staged for tourists.

Interlaken's performances are seasonal and folksy: the amateur open-air William Tell in the woods each summer, yodelling and alphorn evenings, and occasional concerts at the Kursaal. For a proper orchestra you go to Bern.

Both towns are about level here, and neither has its own bathing tradition, so it comes down to hotel spas and the setting. Florence's calm is in its gardens and slow Oltrarno evenings, and its real spa culture lies outside the city, at Montecatini Terme and in the sulphur pools of southern Tuscany.

Interlaken's rest comes from the landscape: lakeside mornings, slow steamer crossings and the quiet of Wengen or Mürren above the busy, activity-focused town.
