The verdict
Choose Florence if you want museums, churches and other notable places within walking distance of one another, plus a wide choice of restaurants and somewhere to drink after dinner.
Choose Interlaken if the point of the trip is the landscape rather than the town: 19% of the surrounding land is protected, 12 beaches lie nearby, and you are content with far fewer places to eat and drink.

Where they differ
Florence has many times as many museums as Interlaken, set tightly around the centre, alongside far more notable places within walking distance. It has 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Interlaken's 2, far more restaurants near the centre, and far more bars and clubs.
Interlaken's advantage is the ground around it: 19% of the land is protected against 9% around Florence, and 12 beaches lie nearby where Florence has none. It also has a few more of the year's driest months, at 40mm or less.
Where they are alike
Neither is a place to swim. Interlaken has 12 beaches nearby and Florence none, but neither has a single month with water at 21°C or more, so swimming is not what either trip is for.
Both also swing hard between seasons, with winter highs of 11°C in Florence and 3°C in Interlaken and a clear summer peak. Both have protected countryside around them for days out of town, though Florence keeps more green space close to the centre.
Which traveller are you?
A traveller who comes for museums and heritage should take Florence: far more museums than Interlaken, set tightly around the centre, and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.
Anyone whose days are spent outdoors is better served by Interlaken, where 19% of the surrounding land is protected and 12 beaches lie nearby, though the water never reaches 21°C.
Families will find more to fill a day in Florence, with about three times as many tourist attractions near the centre and much more park space close by. Neither city has a theme park within reach.
What the numbers don't tell you
The €155 and €248 figures are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either city. A heavily visited city can sit well above its country's average, by more than the gap between these two, so read them as country context rather than a ruling on which trip costs more.
No weather station near Interlaken records sunshine hours, so that side of the weather comparison is unmeasured rather than poor; its monthly picture rests on temperature and rainfall alone. Florence's best months are also its most visited, and its driest are its hottest, at 33°C, in a centre where the sights sit close together.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Florence: 1995-2020 (sunshine 1991-2020, rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Firenze / Peretola (5.6 km from centre). Interlaken: 2005-2020 (rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Meiringen / Unterbach (19.3 km from centre).
Florence peaks in late spring, when highs run 24-29°C with rainfall of 41-63mm. September stays warm at 27°C but turns wet at 102mm, and the two months after it are wetter still. High summer is hot, 32-33°C.
July and August are Interlaken's warmest, at 23-24°C, and also its wettest, near 62mm, while those are Florence's driest months. Either side of high summer the highs drop fast, to 3-5°C in midwinter, so plan it as a summer trip.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
