The verdict

Choose Frankfurt if you are travelling with children or want green space and countryside within reach: more attractions near the centre, considerably more park space, and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip range.

Choose Zurich if swimming matters more than any of that, with 23 beaches nearby, and if clubs rather than bars shape your evenings.

Where they differ

Frankfurt has many times as many tourist attractions near the centre and about three times as much park space, which matters most if you are travelling with children; both places have 2 theme parks within reach. For day trips, 28% of the land around Frankfurt is protected against 16% around Zurich. Germany's national daily estimate is €163 against Switzerland's €248.

Zurich answers with water and late nights: 23 beaches nearby against Frankfurt's 4, and somewhat more nightclubs.

Where they are alike

Neither city gives you a swimming holiday: neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more, so any swimming here is inland rather than coastal.

Both keep their notable places within walking distance of the centre in similar numbers, and the range of kitchens is comparable, even if Frankfurt has somewhat more restaurants near the middle. Nightlife sits centrally in both, Frankfurt leaning to bars and Zurich to clubs.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children: Frankfurt. It has many times as many attractions near the centre and far more park space, so days fill without long journeys, though both cities have 2 theme parks within reach.

Anyone who wants to swim: Zurich, with 23 beaches nearby against Frankfurt's 4. Neither offers sea warm enough to count, so this is warm-weather inland swimming rather than a beach holiday.

Museums and day trips: Frankfurt. Museum numbers are similar in both, but Frankfurt has 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Zurich's 1, and more protected countryside around it.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures are national estimates for Germany and Switzerland, price levels for restaurants and hotels rather than anything measured in either city. A large or heavily visited city can sit well away from its country's average, in either direction, so treat them as a comparison of countries and check real prices for the dates you want.

Zurich's 23 beaches also need weather. The warmest months are the wettest, near 120mm, and no month brings water warm enough to count as sea swimming, so a beach count on its own overstates how much of the year it is usable.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Frankfurt: 1991-2020 normals, Frankfurt Westend (2 km from centre). Zurich: 1991-2020 normals, Zurich Town / Ville. (2.2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Frankfurt is the better summer choice: June to August brings 24-26°C with 60-68mm of rain a month, and warmth lingers into early autumn. April is the driest month either city gets, at 38mm, if you would rather walk than swim.

Zurich is warmest in July and August, but those are also its wettest months at about 120mm, roughly double Frankfurt's at the same time of year. September, at 19°C and drier, is the steadier bet; both cities turn cold once autumn ends.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
