Where they differ
Galway is the compact option. The sea is 1km from the centre against 2km in Liverpool, and the few museums sit tightly around the middle, so days need little planning.
Liverpool is where the gaps are widest: many times as many places to drink and dance; many times as many attractions for families, plus 3 theme parks within reach; and many times as many notable places within walking distance. Restaurants near the centre run to about three times Galway's, in a wider range of kitchens.
Where they are alike
Weather is where the two match most closely. Both are mild rather than hot, with daytime highs of 9-20°C in Galway and 7-21°C in Liverpool, and neither gets a month at 40mm of rain or less.
Both also rate similarly for value, and offer comparable day trips: park space near the centre in each, Liverpool with somewhat more, and swimming close to town without a month of sea at 21°C or more.
Which traveller are you?
If your trip is built around eating out and evenings, Liverpool is the clearer choice: about three times as many restaurants near the centre, a wider range of kitchens, and many times as many bars and clubs.
Families are better served in Liverpool too, with many times as many attractions near the centre, 3 theme parks within reach, 34 beaches along the coast and somewhat more park space.
A traveller after a quiet, walkable few days should pick Galway: a city of 83,500 people, the sea 1km from the centre, and its museums grouped tightly enough to cover on foot.
What the numbers don't tell you
There is no cost comparison to be had here. Galway carries a daily budget of about €187 and Liverpool carries no price figure at all, so nothing in this data says which city is the cheaper trip; the value ratings rest on a different measure that both cities do have.
The beach count flatters Liverpool: 34 beaches nearby still means a sea that peaks at 16-17°C in August and is cool the rest of the year. And Galway's milder winter days come with its wettest weather, above 100mm a month from October to December.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Galway: 1991-2020 normals, Shannon Airport (64.2 km from centre). Liverpool: 1991-2020 normals, Manchester Airport (47.4 km from centre).
Galway peaks in June and July, with highs of 19-20°C and the sea at 16°C by August. It edges ahead in April, when highs hit 14°C and rain drops to 63mm. Winter days are milder, 9°C in January, though wetter, above 100mm from October to December.
Liverpool is the better pick in high summer: July and August bring highs of 20-21°C, the sea at 17°C and 60-73mm of rain. It stays drier through late autumn and winter.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it.
