The verdict

Choose Heidelberg if the trip is built around getting out of town: protected countryside on most sides, 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and quiet evenings.

Choose Lyon if you want the city itself to carry the trip: far more restaurants and bars near the centre, about three times as many notable places within walking distance, and warmer summers reaching 28°C.

Where they differ

Heidelberg is the better base for days out. About 52% of the land around it is protected against 6% around Lyon, and it has 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Lyon's 2. It also puts somewhat more tourist attractions near the centre.

Lyon is the denser city. It has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, many times as many bars and nightclubs, most of them central, and about three times as many notable places within walking distance.

Where they are alike

Neither city works as a swimming trip. Nearby beaches exist, more of them around Lyon, but neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, so water is not what either is for.

They are close elsewhere too: national price levels of €163 in Germany against €160 in France, a similar year of weather at 5-26°C against 7-28°C, and about as many museums in each, though Heidelberg reaches more UNESCO-listed places.

Which traveller are you?

Walkers and day-trippers should take Heidelberg. Over half the surrounding land is protected and 4 UNESCO-listed places sit within day-trip reach, so most of a week can be spent outside the city.

Anyone travelling for food and evenings out should take Lyon: many times as many restaurants near the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, and many times as many bars and clubs, most within walking distance.

Families lean to Lyon, with far more park space near the centre and 2 theme parks within reach against Heidelberg's 1, though Heidelberg keeps somewhat more attractions close to its own centre.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €163 and €160, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel prices, not measurements of either city. A city can sit well away from its country's average, by more than the gap between these two, so neither reads as the cheaper trip on this evidence.

Heidelberg's outdoor advantage is measured on the land around it, roughly half of it protected, which means transport and a planned day rather than green space at the door; Lyon has far more park near the centre. Lyon's 26 nearby beaches change little, since neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Heidelberg: 1991-2020 normals, Heidelberg (4.5 km from centre). Lyon: 1991-2020 normals, Lyon / Bron (10.6 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Heidelberg is at its best from June to August, with highs of 24-26°C, though July brings 80mm. September stays at 21°C on 56mm, drier than Lyon at the same time and the better late-summer choice.

Lyon runs warmer through the same months, up to 28°C, and takes less rain in midsummer at 66mm. Its autumn is the wet one, 101mm in October, so spring is the alternative window, milder than Heidelberg's from March.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
