The verdict
Choose Helsinki if you want a city trip: more places to eat, more to do after dark, and far more notable places within walking distance of the centre, with July highs of 22°C.
Choose Reykjavik if the point is what lies outside the city, where 16% of the surrounding land is protected, several times the share around Helsinki, and a quiet evening is no loss.

Where they differ
Helsinki is the better city itself: about three times as many restaurants near the centre and a wider range of kitchens, many times as many bars and nightclubs, and many times as many notable places within walking distance.
Reykjavik's advantage begins at the edge of town: 16% of the land around it is protected against 3% around Helsinki, which is what makes the day trips. Helsinki has far more park space near the centre, but that is greenery rather than open country.
Where they are alike
Both sit on the water: the sea is 0km from either centre, and both offer a swimming season rather than a swimming climate, since neither reaches a month of sea at 21°C or more. Helsinki has 157 beaches nearby against Reykjavik's 33.
Museums and heritage are near-matched: Helsinki has more of them, Reykjavik's are packed more tightly around the centre, and each has one UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach. Neither country's national price estimate is a low one.
Which traveller are you?
Someone after food and evenings out should take Helsinki: roughly three times as many restaurants near the centre, a wider spread of kitchens, and many times as many bars and clubs, nearly all of them central.
Walkers and drivers who want landscape should take Reykjavik, where 16% of the surrounding land is protected against 3% around Helsinki. The city itself is quieter, with fewer notable places within walking distance.
Families are better served in Helsinki: similar numbers of attractions near the centre and one theme park each, but far more park space close in, and warmer summer days for being outside.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €184 for Finland and €243 for Iceland, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of Helsinki or Reykjavik. Capital cities can sit further from their own national average than these two figures sit from each other, so the gap says little about either trip.
Both stand equally on beaches, which flatters them: the water tops out at 17°C in Helsinki and 11°C in Reykjavik, so the sea is a short season in one and a bracing dip in the other. In Helsinki the warmest sea and the heaviest rain fall in the same month.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Helsinki: 1991-2020 normals, Helsinki Kaisaniemi / Harju (1.6 km from centre). Reykjavik: 1991-2020 normals, Reykjavik (2.3 km from centre).
Helsinki is the stronger summer pick. July brings highs of 22°C and the sea peaks at 17°C in August, though August is also the wettest month at 84mm. May and June are drier and better for walking.
Reykjavik never warms far, with July highs of 15°C, but its driest stretch falls in May and June, near 41mm. Winter there is wet, above 86mm in most months, while Helsinki is colder but drier then.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
