Where they differ

Helsinki puts the sea at its centre, 0km from the middle of the city against 12km in Riga, and there are far more beaches close by, 157 against 57. It also has about three times as many tourist attractions and as much park space near the centre, which is what makes it the easier city with children.

Latvia's estimated daily budget is €132 against €184 in Finland, a national gap worth planning around. Riga also has somewhat more museums, sitting more tightly around its centre.

Where they are alike

Nature and day trips work out much the same, arranged differently: protected land covers 10% of the area around Riga against 3% around Helsinki, while Helsinki keeps more of its greenery as park space inside the city.

Nights out are similar in kind, with drinking places and clubs concentrated near both centres. The weather runs close as well: cold winters, mild summers, and neither city has a month with the sea at 21°C or more.

Which traveller are you?

Museum-minded weekenders: Riga. More museums, packed tightly enough to walk between them, one UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach as in Helsinki, and Latvia's national price level leaves more room in a short budget.

Eating and drinking: Helsinki for the wider choice, with about twice as many restaurants near the centre and more kitchens represented. Riga answers with more nightclubs, most of them close to the centre.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget is a national estimate of restaurant and hotel prices, €184 for Finland and €132 for Latvia, not a measurement of either city. A capital can sit far enough from its own country's average that the difference outweighs the gap between the two figures, so treat it as background, not as a comparison of what a day in Helsinki or Riga costs.

No weather station near Riga records sunshine hours, so that side of the weather is simply unmeasured. And a strong beach showing is not a swimming season: neither sea reaches 21°C, and the warmest water arrives in August, Helsinki's wettest month at 84mm.

Riga suits the shoulders better. April reaches 12°C against Helsinki's 8°C, and September holds 17°C with the sea at 16°C, warm enough to swim later in the year. October turns wet at 82mm.
