Where they differ
Innsbruck keeps more park space near the centre, and its museums sit tightly around it, so a day on foot covers more. It is the sunnier of the two, at 1992 hours a year against 1753.
Nuremberg has about three times as many restaurants near the centre and a wider range of kitchens, twice as many bars and clubs, and about three times as many tourist attractions near the centre for families. Around 42% of the land near it is protected, against 31% near Innsbruck.
Where they are alike
Both centres hold about the same number of notable places within walking distance, so in either you can base yourself centrally and walk to most of what you came for.
The two also run similar daytime highs of about 4-26°C across the year, and the national price levels behind them are close, at €160 in Austria and €163 in Germany. Neither is a swimming destination: no month brings sea at 21°C or more.
Which traveller are you?
Someone whose evenings decide the trip should take Nuremberg: about three times as many restaurants near the centre, a wider range of kitchens, and roughly twice as many bars and clubs, most of them centrally placed.
Families also lean Nuremberg, with about three times as many tourist attractions near the centre. Both have 2 theme parks within reach, and Innsbruck answers with more park space close to the centre.
Anyone planning walks and days out of town is better served by Innsbruck, which has the greener centre and the stronger surroundings, though both hold 1 UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach and similarly walkable centres.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget, €160 for Austria and €163 for Germany, is a national price level for restaurants and hotels, not a measurement of either city. A city can sit well above or below its own country's average, by more than the gap between these two figures, so it says nothing about which trip costs more.
The beach count misleads too: Innsbruck has 10 beaches nearby, but neither city has a month of sea at 21°C or more, so neither is a swimming trip. And Innsbruck's warmest months are also its wettest, so a warm July or August forecast is not a dry one.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Innsbruck: 1991-2020 normals, Innsbruck-Flughafen (3.3 km from centre). Nuremberg: 1991-2020 normals, Nuernberg (5.5 km from centre).
Innsbruck is at its best from June to September, but its warmest months are also its wettest, with 129mm in July and 144mm in August. September is the steadier month, 21°C and 89mm, and autumn holds warmth slightly longer than in Nuremberg.
Nuremberg suits a summer trip better if rain matters: June to August stay at 23-25°C on 60-77mm, roughly half Innsbruck's. Spring is close in both. Winter is cold in both, with highs of 4°C in January.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
