Where they differ

Interlaken is the smaller place, and much of what it offers lies outside the town: 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Nuremberg's 1, and 12 beaches nearby against 6.

Nuremberg is the fuller city. It has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, many times as many bars and clubs, most of them central, and much more for families: many times as many attractions and park space near the centre, plus 2 theme parks where Interlaken has none.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, so bathing is a side activity rather than a reason to go, whether you use Interlaken's 12 beaches nearby or Nuremberg's 6.

The weather is close too: highs of 3-25°C across the year, cold winters and short warm summers. Both also keep their notable places and their drinking spots near the centre, so each is walkable, and both have country within day-trip reach.

Which traveller are you?

A traveller after museums and evenings out should take Nuremberg: many times as many museums, a much wider range of kitchens, and many times as many bars and clubs, most of them close to the centre.

Families are better served in Nuremberg too, with 2 theme parks within reach where Interlaken has none, many times as many attractions near the centre, and far more park space to break up a day.

Anyone wanting a small, quiet base for time outdoors will prefer Interlaken, with 12 beaches nearby against 6 and 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, though protected land is wider around Nuremberg, 42% against 19%.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €248 and €163, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A small resort town and a large city can each sit a long way from their own country's average, so treat the gap as background rather than as what your week will cost.

The sunshine figure is missing for Interlaken: no nearby station records it, so that side of the weather comparison is unmeasured, and the monthly picture there rests on temperature and rainfall alone. Note also that Nuremberg's warmest months are among its wettest, at 77mm in July.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Interlaken: 2005-2020 (rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Meiringen / Unterbach (19.3 km from centre). Nuremberg: 1991-2020 normals, Nuernberg (5.5 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Interlaken is the better pick from July to September: highs of 18-24°C, drier summers than Nuremberg at 62mm in July against 77mm, and an autumn that holds up a little longer.

Nuremberg starts earlier. May already reaches 20°C, though late spring and early summer are wetter there, above 60mm a month, and August is its warmest at 25°C. December is bleak in both, though Nuremberg is the drier of the two then.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
