The verdict

Choose Interlaken if the trip is about being outdoors: 19% of the surrounding land is protected, lake beaches are within easy reach, and summer highs near 24°C suit long walking days.

Choose Pisa if you want a compact centre covered on foot, museums close together, attractions and theme parks that work with children, and a sea warm enough to swim in for four months of the year.

Where they differ

Interlaken has 12 beaches nearby, lake rather than sea, and 19% of the surrounding land is protected against 9% around Pisa. Its restaurants are fewer but span a wider range of kitchens.

Pisa has many times as many museums, set tightly around the centre, and 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Interlaken's 2. For families it offers about twice as many attractions near the centre, far more park space, and 2 theme parks where Interlaken has none. Italy's national price level is €155 a day against Switzerland's €248.

Where they are alike

Eating out is a modest affair in both. Neither is a large restaurant city: Pisa has roughly three times as many near the centre, Interlaken a wider spread of kitchens, and in both the choice sits close to the middle.

Both also have protected countryside within day-trip reach and a clear summer peak, warmest in July or August and coolest in January in each case, with workable shoulder months either side.

Which traveller are you?

Families with young children: Pisa. About twice as many attractions near the centre, far more park space and 2 theme parks within reach, plus four months of sea at 21°C or more for swimming.

Anyone travelling for museums and old streets: Pisa again. Many times as many museums, set close together, 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and most of the notable buildings within walking distance of the centre.

Walkers and lake swimmers: Interlaken. 19% of the surrounding land is protected, 12 beaches sit within reach for lake swimming, and summer highs near 24°C suit long days outdoors.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €248 for Switzerland and €155 for Italy, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A heavily visited town can sit well away from its own country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so treat them as country context rather than what your trip will cost.

No weather station near Interlaken records sunshine hours, so that series is missing rather than low, and that side of the weather comparison is unmeasured. Pisa's weather strength also rests on warmth and sea temperature: its driest months are its hottest and busiest, and autumn brings 102-132mm of rain.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
