The verdict

Choose Interlaken if the trip is about being outdoors and quiet: it sits in much more protected country, with lake beaches rather than a coast, and a small town's evenings.

Choose Turin if you want a city around you: many times more museums, restaurants and bars near the centre, more for children to do, and warmer days, up to 29°C in the height of summer.

Where they differ

Interlaken has far more protected land within reach, 19% of the area around it against 6% around Turin, and 12 beaches nearby against Turin's 1, all of them lake rather than sea.

Turin has many times as many places to drink and dance, and many times as many museums, sitting tightly around the centre, with 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Interlaken's 2. It also has about three times as many attractions near the centre for families and far more park space, though neither has a theme park.

Where they are alike

Neither city is a place to swim in the sea. No month at either brings sea water to 21°C or more, so any swimming is inland: lake beaches at Interlaken, a single one at Turin, and only in the warm months.

They are close, too, on nature and on year-round conditions: both are inland, with winter highs of 3-7°C and summers above 20°C, and both have protected country and day trips within reach, more of it around Interlaken.

Which traveller are you?

Walkers and lake swimmers should take Interlaken. Nearly a fifth of the land around it is protected, it has 12 beaches to Turin's 1, and summer highs of 22-24°C suit long days outdoors.

Museum-minded travellers, and anyone who eats and drinks their way through a trip, want Turin: many times more museums and restaurants near the centre, most of them within walking distance, and far more bars and clubs.

Families are better served in Turin, with about three times as many attractions near the centre and much more park space, though neither city has a theme park within reach, so plan around museums and outdoors.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures behind these two, €248 and €155, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels rather than measurements of Interlaken or Turin. A small town and a large city can each sit far from their own national average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so read them as background on the countries, not as what your days will cost.

No weather station near either city records sunshine hours, so that part of the weather comparison is unmeasured; the monthly picture here rests on temperature and rainfall alone. And Interlaken's 12 beaches are lake shore, usable only in the warm months.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Interlaken: 2005-2020 (rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Meiringen / Unterbach (19.3 km from centre). Turin: 1991-2020 normals, Torino / Caselle (15.4 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Interlaken is at its best in high summer, with highs of 22-24°C from June to August. September is the quieter option, still 18°C and one of the drier months at 38mm.

Turin runs warmer through the same window, at 26-29°C in June and July, and high summer is among its drier stretches, 57mm at the peak. Its autumn is the difference: still 24°C in September, but 116mm of rain, so late-season warmth comes with wet days.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
