Where they differ
Istanbul is the denser city by a wide margin: many times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, and far more restaurants and museums near the middle. Its nightlife is on another scale, with many times as many bars and clubs. It also has 2 beaches and 3 months with the sea at 21°C or warmer.
Marrakech is warmer and drier, at 19-38°C across the year against Istanbul's 9-30°C. It ranks higher for day trips beyond the city, and its kitchens cover a somewhat wider range.
Where they are alike
Value for money is where the two sit closest, and both sit high on it. Whichever you pick, this is not the axis that should decide it.
They are close on families and on eating as well. Each has 2 theme parks within reach and parkland near the centre, and each puts attractions in the middle of town, though Istanbul has about twice as many. Istanbul has the greater number of restaurants; Marrakech the wider spread of kitchens.
Which traveller are you?
If you travel for museums, walkable centres and a long list of places to eat, Istanbul answers all three, and a day there sits around €100. The night out is its own argument.
If you are travelling in winter or the shoulder months and want warmth without rain, Marrakech is the clearer choice: days at 19-21°C in January and February, and dry months for most of the year.
Families with swimmers should take Istanbul in summer: 2 beaches, sea at 21-24°C from June to August, and about twice the attractions near the centre. Both cities have 2 theme parks within reach.
What the numbers don't tell you
No cost comparison is possible here. The data carries a daily budget for Istanbul, about €100, and none at all for Marrakech, so treat any impression that one is the cheaper trip as unfounded: the value ranking rests on a different measure that both cities have, not on what a day costs.
Istanbul's edge at the beach is narrow: only 3 months with the sea above 21°C, all in peak season. Marrakech's strong year-round weather standing averages out a July at 38°C, when walking the city in the afternoon is another matter.
When should you go?

Istanbul is at its best from May to September: highs of 22-30°C, summer rain down at 23-29mm, and the sea at 21-24°C in July and August. From October the rain returns, reaching 101mm in December.
Marrakech suits the shoulder months. March to May and October to November hold 23-30°C with 9-36mm of rain, and winter days stay near 19-21°C. July, at 38°C, is the one to plan around. No month there is genuinely wet, which is not true of Istanbul in autumn.
