The verdict

Choose Kotor if the sea is the point: 50 beaches within reach, five months warm enough to swim, and UNESCO-listed places on day trips from a very small town.

Choose Plovdiv if you want a city rather than a coast: many times more places to eat and drink, three times as many notable places within walking distance, and real park space near the centre.

Where they differ

Kotor has 50 beaches nearby where Plovdiv has 1, and its sea stays at 21°C or more for five months. It also has twice as many tourist attractions near the centre, 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and a larger share of protected land.

Plovdiv has many times as many restaurants, places to drink and nightclubs, most of them near the centre. It has three times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre and three times as many museums, plus far more park space.

Where they are alike

Weather is where the two sit closest. Both peak in August, Kotor at 33°C and Plovdiv at 31°C, and both give a long warm season rather than a brief one.

Both also keep their museums near the centre, Plovdiv with the larger collection, Kotor with UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach instead. And the national price levels behind them are not far apart, an estimated €95 a day in one country against €77 in the other.

Which traveller are you?

If swimming decides it, Kotor: 50 beaches within reach and an August sea of 26°C, against a single beach and no swimmable water at Plovdiv.

If you want to eat out and stay out, Plovdiv: many times as many restaurants, bars and nightclubs, most of them walkable from the centre, alongside the deeper museum offering.

Travelling with children, Plovdiv offers far more park space near the centre and Kotor twice as many tourist attractions close in; neither has a theme park within reach, so it turns on whether you want beach days.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €95 and €77, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of Kotor or Plovdiv. A small coastal town in high season and a large inland city can each sit far from their country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so neither can be called the cheaper trip on this evidence.

Kotor's beach advantage rests on a five-month stretch of warm sea. Outside it, the thing it leads on closes down and the wettest months arrive, 256mm in November. A year-round view of Kotor looks very different from a July one.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Kotor: 1991-2020 normals, Podgorica / Golubovci (39.9 km from centre). Plovdiv: 1997-2020 (sunshine 1991-2020, rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Plovdiv (1.2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Kotor is at its best from June to August: highs of 30-33°C, a sea at 23-26°C and as little as 38mm of rain at the driest. Autumn turns wet quickly, with 173mm in September and more after that.

Plovdiv's usable window is wider, May to September, with days of 24-31°C and rain that never gathers as it does on Kotor's coast; August is its driest at 25mm. Winter is the weak stretch, with highs near 5°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
