The verdict

Choose Ljubljana if you want wider choice at the table and easy escapes from the city: far more of the surrounding land is protected, and three UNESCO-listed places sit within day-trip reach.

Choose Sarajevo if you would rather stay put and walk: more museums and more notable places packed close to the centre, and drier autumn months.

Where they differ

Ljubljana is the better base for getting out of town: 13% of the land around it is protected against 2% around Sarajevo, and it has roughly twice as much park space near the centre. It also has somewhat more restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens to choose from.

Sarajevo packs more into walking distance: somewhat more notable places near the centre, somewhat more museums, and more tourist attractions close in. It is also the drier, with autumn rain running at roughly half Ljubljana's.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming trip. Ljubljana has 10 beaches nearby and Sarajevo none, but neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more, so neither suits a swimming holiday.

Both keep their main interest within walking distance of the centre, both hold a comparable stock of museums, and both have about as many places to drink. Neither has a theme park within reach, and family appeal in both rests on parks and attractions near the centre.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone travelling for meals and late nights should take Ljubljana. It has somewhat more restaurants near the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, and about twice as many nightclubs, most of them close in.

A traveller who wants to walk everywhere and read plaques will get more from Sarajevo, which packs somewhat more notable places and somewhat more museums into the centre. Ljubljana counters with three UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.

Families and walkers do better in Ljubljana: 13% of the surrounding land is protected against 2%, and there is roughly twice as much park space near the centre. Neither city has a theme park within reach.

What the numbers don't tell you

Ljubljana's day-to-day cost comes out at about €131 a day. No equivalent figure exists for Sarajevo, so the two cannot be compared on price at all; the value ranking here rests on a different measure that both cities have, and it says nothing about what a day there will cost.

Ljubljana's 10 nearby beaches are not a seaside: neither city has a month of sea at 21°C or more. Its warmest months are also its wettest, and neither city has a month at 40mm of rain or less, so a warm week is not a dry one.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Ljubljana: 1991-2020 normals, Ljubljana / Bezigrad (1.9 km from centre). Sarajevo: 1991-2020 normals, Sarajevo-Bejelave (2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Ljubljana is at its best in June, July and August, with highs of 26-28°C. Rain is heavy right through, and heavier still afterwards, at 159mm in September. Nothing in the year is genuinely dry here, so plan for showers whichever month you pick.

Sarajevo reaches the same 28°C in high summer but on less rain, and its autumn lasts longer: 22°C in September on 88mm, roughly half Ljubljana's. Winter is cold in both, at 4°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
