Where they differ

Mostar is the warmer of the two, with daytime highs of 9-33°C across the year against 4-28°C in Sarajevo, and it gets more sun. It has 7 beaches nearby, and 6% of the land around it is protected against 2% around Sarajevo.

Sarajevo is the stronger city on foot: many times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, about twice as many tourist attractions and restaurants near the centre, about three times as many museums and places to drink, and more park space.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Mostar has 7 beaches within reach and Sarajevo none, but neither city sees a month of sea at 21°C or more, so a trip built around swimming does not work from either.

Both are inland and share a wet climate: neither has a month at 40mm of rain or less, and rain falls in every month of the year. Each also has one UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone who wants museums and heritage within walking distance should take Sarajevo: a much deeper museum offering than Mostar and many more notable places clustered near the centre, so days need little planning.

For eating out and evenings, Sarajevo again: roughly twice the restaurants near the centre, a wider range of kitchens, and about three times as many places to drink, most of them central.

Travellers chasing heat will prefer Mostar, warmer month by month and reaching 33°C in summer, with 7 beaches nearby and a larger share of protected land around it.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value figures here tell you nothing about the choice between these two. They reflect a national price level shared by both cities, and no daily budget figure exists for either, so no cost comparison between Mostar and Sarajevo is possible here.

Mostar's beaches read better than they behave: neither city has a month of sea at 21°C or more. Its best-rated months are also flanked by heavy rain, 143mm in early autumn and near 198mm later, so a shoulder-season trip can be wet, and midsummer brings 33°C days that suit few people.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Mostar: 1991-2020 normals, Mostar (0.9 km from centre). Sarajevo: 1991-2020 normals, Sarajevo-Bejelave (2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Mostar is at its best in May and June, when highs reach 25-30°C and rainfall drops to 71-90mm. Midsummer pushes to 33°C, and early autumn turns wet again at 143mm. Late autumn is the wettest stretch, near 198mm.

Sarajevo peaks in high summer, with highs of 25-28°C and rain of 66-88mm, more even than Mostar's swings. Winter is cold there, with highs of 4°C, so it is the weaker choice out of season.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
