The verdict

Choose Ljubljana if you eat and drink your way through a city break: a wider range of kitchens, more clubs, and more notable places within walking distance of the centre.

Choose Verona if you are travelling with children or want a longer warm season: theme parks within reach, far more attractions near the centre, and daytime highs reaching 30°C in July.

Where they differ

Ljubljana's kitchens cover much more ground, so a week there means more variation in what you eat, even though Verona has about twice as many restaurants near the centre.

Verona is the easier city with children: many times as many tourist attractions near the centre and 4 theme parks within reach, where Ljubljana has none. It also runs warmer, 7-30°C against 4-28°C, and has one month at 40mm of rain or less where Ljubljana has none; Ljubljana counters with more park space near the centre.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Ljubljana has 10 beaches nearby and Verona 2, but neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more.

Both hold a comparable stock of museums and heritage: Ljubljana has somewhat more museums, Verona 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 3. Places to drink are similar in number and mostly central, each centre carries most of its notable places within walking distance, and protected land around each is a similar share.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children, Verona is the clearer choice: many more tourist attractions near the centre and 4 theme parks within reach, where Ljubljana has none, though Ljubljana has more park space centrally.

If the trip is built around eating and going out, take Ljubljana: a much wider range of kitchens, and about three times as many nightclubs as Verona, most of them near the centre.

Museum-minded walkers can take either. Ljubljana packs somewhat more notable places into walking distance and holds more museums; Verona counters with 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 3.

What the numbers don't tell you

Ljubljana's 10 nearby beaches do not add up to a swimming season: neither city has a month with sea at 21°C or more, and the wettest stretch of Ljubljana's year falls across the warm months when you would want to use them.

The daily budget figures, €131 and €155, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels rather than measurements of either city. A capital or a heavily visited city can sit further from its own country's average than these two figures sit from each other, so neither settles which trip will cost you more.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Ljubljana: 1991-2020 normals, Ljubljana / Bezigrad (1.9 km from centre). Verona: 1991-2020 normals, Verona / Villafranca (11.6 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Ljubljana suits June to August, with highs of 26-28°C, though those months carry 121-126mm and September is wetter still at 159mm, which makes early autumn a gamble.

Verona works across a longer stretch: 24-28°C in May and June with 68-72mm, and warm again in September at roughly half Ljubljana's rainfall. July and August reach 30°C, hot but drier than Ljubljana at the same time of year. Its winters are milder too, though neither city is at its best then.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
