The verdict

Choose Lucerne if you want the livelier evening: more places to drink, more clubs and a wider range of kitchens, and if a summer that tops out at 24°C suits you better than heat.

Choose Monaco if swimming and sightseeing on foot decide it: 50 beaches nearby, sea reaching 25°C, and most of the notable places packed around the centre.

Where they differ

Lucerne is the stronger city for an evening out: roughly three times as many places to drink and about twice as many nightclubs, most of them near the centre, and a much wider range of kitchens across a similar number of restaurants. It also has twice the central park space.

Monaco wins on water and on walking: 50 beaches nearby against Lucerne's 16, and far more notable places within walking distance of the centre. Around it, 24% of the land is protected against 7% near Lucerne.

Where they are alike

Museums are the closest match: the two hold a comparable number, so neither is the obvious choice for an indoor afternoon. The difference lies beyond the city: 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach of Monaco against 1 from Lucerne.

They are also close on families and on eating out, with a similar number of tourist attractions near the centre in each and a similar number of restaurants, so either works for a short stay covered on foot.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone whose trip is built around swimming should take Monaco: 50 beaches within reach and four months of sea at 21°C or more, where Lucerne has no swimming season at all.

If evenings out matter more than daytime heat, take Lucerne: more bars and more clubs than Monaco, most of them central, and a broader spread of kitchens across a similar number of restaurants.

For a family trip it is close. Lucerne has about twice as much central park space; Monaco counters with 3 theme parks within reach against Lucerne's 1, plus the sea itself.

What the numbers don't tell you

No cost comparison is possible between these two. The data carries a daily budget for Lucerne, around €248, but none at all for Monaco, so nothing here tells you whether Monaco costs more, less or the same, and value cannot be ranked between them.

The weather figures also hide their timing. Monaco's warmest, driest months are the ones everyone else books, and its autumn, still around 21°C, brings its heaviest rain, near 138mm. Lucerne's best-rated months are simultaneously its wettest, close to 126mm, so a summer trip there means planning around rain rather than around heat.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Lucerne: 1991-2020 normals, Zurich Town / Ville. (41.7 km from centre). Monaco: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (19.9 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Lucerne is best in July and August, when highs reach 24°C, though those are also its wettest months at around 126mm, so pack for showers. September is cooler and drier.

Monaco runs warmer in the same pair of months, 28°C with sea at 24-25°C and under 20mm of rain, and it stays usable in winter, near 13°C. Its wet season comes in autumn: October and November are the months to avoid there.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
