Where they differ
Mexico City is the stronger city for museums and heritage: roughly twice as many museums as Sao Paulo, clustered tightly around the centre, plus 6 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against none for Sao Paulo. The land around it is more protected too, 30% against 26%.
Sao Paulo answers with food: a much wider range of kitchens, though Mexico City has somewhat more restaurants near the centre. For green space you can actually use day to day, Sao Paulo has about twice as much park space near the centre.
Where they are alike
Neither city is a swimming trip. Sao Paulo has no beach nearby, and Mexico City's 4 are not backed by a month of sea at 21°C or more. Plan either as an inland city break.
Both sit close on a walkable centre and on family travel. Mexico City has somewhat more notable places within walking distance; Sao Paulo has about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre, while Mexico City has 4 theme parks within reach against 1.
Which traveller are you?
Anyone travelling for museums and old cities should take Mexico City. It holds roughly twice as many museums as Sao Paulo, most of them within reach of the centre, and 6 UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip distance.
A traveller who plans days around meals will get more out of Sao Paulo, where the range of kitchens is far wider. If the evening matters more than the meal, Mexico City has about twice as many nightclubs.
Families are a closer call. Sao Paulo has about twice as many attractions and park space near the centre, easy on foot; Mexico City counters with 4 theme parks within reach against 1.
What the numbers don't tell you
No cost comparison is possible here. The dataset carries no daily budget figure for either city, so nothing on this page tells you which is the cheaper trip; the value ranking rests on a different measure entirely. Price the two separately before deciding.
Steady annual temperatures hide the year's shape. Mexico City sits at 22-28°C all year, yet July and August bring the wettest afternoons of its year. Sao Paulo's warmest months are also its wettest. A mild average tells you nothing about how many afternoons you will spend indoors.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Mexico City: 1991-2020 normals, Mexico Central, D. F. (7.9 km from centre). Sao Paulo: 1991-2020 normals, Sao Paulo (5.9 km from centre).
Mexico City is at its best from February to April, when highs run 25-28°C and rainfall stays at 3-27mm. November to January is dry too, at 22-23°C. Skip July and August, the wettest stretch of its year, when 176-186mm falls.
Sao Paulo peaks in August: 25°C and 26mm, its driest month. April to September stays reasonably dry at 26-89mm. January and February are hot at 28-29°C but soaked, at 259-297mm. Rain, not heat, sets the calendar there.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
