Where they differ

Milan is the stronger family trip: many times as many attractions near the centre, about twice as much park space, and 5 theme parks within reach where Palermo has none. It also has far more open country around it, with 30% of the surrounding land protected against 4% around Palermo, and about three times as many museums.

Palermo answers with the sea: 13 beaches nearby against Milan's 4, and five months when the water sits at 21°C or more, which Milan cannot offer at all.

Where they are alike

Summer heat is much the same in both: Milan peaks at 29°C in July, Palermo at 28°C in August, and January is the coolest month in each, so neither is a purely seasonal destination.

The other close call is the centre itself. Both keep their notable places within walking distance, Milan simply with more of them, and both have restaurants clustered near the middle, so neither trip needs a car for sightseeing and dinner.

Anyone whose holiday means swimming should take Palermo: 13 beaches nearby, sea reaching 27°C in August and almost no rain through the summer. Milan has no swimming season at all.

For eating and going out, Milan is the wider choice, with about twice as many restaurants near the centre and far more bars and clubs. Palermo's are fewer but concentrated close in, easy on foot.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value figure is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so the comparison between these two cities carries no information whatsoever. The daily budget of €155 is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either place, and tells you nothing about which trip will cost more.

Milan's advantages in nature and family days rest partly outside the city: protected land, theme parks and UNESCO places within day-trip reach all need travel time. Its wettest months arrive in autumn, just as the warm season ends. Palermo's swimming window is also when every other visitor arrives.

Palermo's warm season is longer and drier: June to September holds 24-28°C with sea at 22-27°C and monthly rain under 12mm. Its winter days stay near 13°C, so it also works as an off-season city break when Milan is cold and grey.
