The verdict
Choose Naples if you want a dense old city: many times as many notable places within walking distance, many times as many museums, and about three times as many places to drink.
Choose Split if swimming comes first: the sea starts at the centre and there are 87 beaches nearby, against 29 around Naples, on a much smaller and quieter base.

Where they differ
Naples concentrates far more into walking range: many times as many notable places near the centre, and many times as many museums. Nights out are wider too, with about three times as many places to drink and more nightclubs, most of them central.
Split trades that for the water: the sea is 0km from its centre against 1km in Naples, and there are 87 beaches nearby against 29. Its restaurants cover a wider range of kitchens, and Croatia's estimated daily budget is €138 against Italy's €155.
Where they are alike
Day trips are the weaker side for both. Protected land is a modest share of the surroundings either way, 9% around Split and 7% around Naples, and neither city leans on countryside excursions.
Both sit on warm water with a similar swimming season: highs reach 31°C in high summer and the sea peaks at 25-26°C in August. Eating out is a limited draw in each, Naples on numbers, Split on variety.
Which traveller are you?
If you travel for museums and old streets, take Naples: many times as many museums as Split, far more notable places within walking distance of the centre, and 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 4.
If the day is built around swimming, take Split: the sea begins at the centre rather than 1km out, and there are 87 beaches nearby against 29 around Naples.
Families lean Naples, though neither city is strong here: more tourist attractions and park space near the centre, and 3 theme parks within reach where Split has none. Nights out favour Naples too, with far more bars and clubs.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €155 and €138, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A heavily visited coastal city can sit further from its country's average than these two figures sit from each other.
Beach and weather strengths hide timing. Split's beach count and central shoreline say nothing about August crowding, and Naples's warmth is a summer matter: its wettest months fall in autumn. The counts behind its lead in sights and bars are taken near the centre, and mean less if you stay further out.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Naples: 1991-2020 normals, Grazzanise (28.3 km from centre). Split: 1991-2020 normals, Split / Marjan (0.9 km from centre).
Naples is the stronger pick from June to September: highs of 28-31°C, July and August almost rainless at 17-18mm, and a sea warm enough for swimming a month longer than Split's. October is still warm but carries 92mm, and November 159mm.
Split's case is spring and early autumn: March and April are drier than Naples, 59mm and 62mm against 82mm and 73mm, with highs of 15-18°C. Winter is the cooler of the two.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
