Choose Pisa if you are travelling with children or want museums close together: about twice as many attractions near the centre, 2 theme parks within reach, and the sea 10km away.

Where they differ
Pisa is the better base for families: about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre as Split, more park space, and 2 theme parks within reach where Split has none. Swimming means a trip out, with the sea 10km from the centre and a single beach nearby.
Split puts the water at the door: the sea is 0km from the centre, with 87 beaches nearby. Evenings run longer, with about twice as many places to drink as Pisa and many times more nightclubs, most near the centre.
Where they are alike
Weather is where the two are hardest to separate: both run daytime highs of about 11-30°C across the year, each has two months at 40mm of rain or less, and both peak with the sea at 25°C in August.
Elsewhere they sit close on heritage, food and day trips. Pisa has more museums, Split more UNESCO-listed places within reach; 9% of surrounding land is protected in both; and while Pisa has more restaurants near the centre, Split spreads across more kitchens.
Which traveller are you?
If swimming shapes the day, take Split: the sea is 0km from the centre with 87 beaches nearby, and four months of water at 21°C or more. Pisa's one beach sits 10km out.
Families with children are better served in Pisa, with roughly twice as many attractions near the centre, more park space, and 2 theme parks within reach where Split has none.
For long evenings and variety at the table, Split has about twice as many drinking places and many more nightclubs, most of them near the centre, plus a wider spread of kitchens; Pisa has more restaurants close in.
What the numbers don't tell you
Split's beach advantage is a summer one: the sea reaches 21°C or more for four months only, and a centre that opens straight onto the water concentrates those months. Pisa's single beach, 10km out, reads worse but is quieter.
The daily budget figures, €155 and €138, are national price estimates for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A heavily visited city can sit further from its national average than the gap between the two figures, so neither settles what a trip costs.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Pisa: 1991-2020 normals, Pisa / S. Giusto (3.9 km from centre). Split: 1991-2020 normals, Split / Marjan (0.9 km from centre).
Pisa peaks in July and August: highs of 30°C, only 32mm of rain in July and the sea at 25°C by August. September and October are the catch, 102mm then 125mm, so late-season trips carry more risk.
Split's warm window is wider. May is already up at 23°C, and September holds 25°C with 82mm of rain where Pisa gets more, and October is drier in Split too. July is the hottest month at 31°C, with just 25mm of rain.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-09, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
