The verdict

Choose Rovinj if the trip is built around swimming: 55 beaches nearby and sea warm enough to swim in from June to September, in a town of 13,000 people.

Choose Salzburg if you want museums, a centre with far more to see on foot, a wider choice of places to eat and more for children, and can accept cooler, wetter summers.

Where they differ

Rovinj is the one with a coast: 55 beaches nearby against 9 around Salzburg, and four months when the sea reaches 21°C or more, which Salzburg never does. It also runs warmer through the year, with daytime highs of 9-29°C against 3-25°C.

Salzburg has many times as many notable places within walking distance of its centre, many more museums, and 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Rovinj's 1. It also has more restaurants near the centre and a wider range of kitchens.

Where they are alike

Weather is where the two sit closest. Both peak in July and are coldest in January, and neither has a month at 40mm of rain or less.

Neither is mainly about getting out into wild country: 6% of the land around Salzburg is protected and 2% around Rovinj. The national price estimates for the two countries are also fairly close, so cost is unlikely to decide this one.

Which traveller are you?

Swimmers: Rovinj, clearly. It has 55 beaches nearby and sea at 21°C or more for four months of the year, which Salzburg cannot match at any point in its calendar.

Museum-goers and city walkers: Salzburg. Far more museums, 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Rovinj's 1, and a centre where most of what is worth seeing sits within walking distance.

Families: Salzburg again. It has more tourist attractions near the centre, much more park space and a slightly wider choice of theme parks; Rovinj's case for children rests almost entirely on the summer sea.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €138 and €160, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels for the two countries, not measurements of either city. A small coastal town and a heavily visited city can each sit far from their national average, by more than the gap between these two figures.

The beach count is a summer asset. Rovinj has 55 beaches and about 13,000 residents, so the months when the sea is warm are also the months the crowd arrives. Salzburg's warmest months are its wettest, so its strongest window is not a dry one.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Rovinj: 1991-2020 normals, Trieste (63.7 km from centre). Salzburg: 1991-2020 normals, Salzburg (3.4 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Rovinj works best from June to September: highs of 27-29°C, sea at 22-26°C and its lightest rain in midsummer, 61mm in July. Later in autumn the rain builds towards 125mm a month while days stay mild.

Salzburg's warmest months are also its wettest: 25°C in July and August with 159-167mm. April and October are drier at 80-90mm, with highs of 16°C and 15°C, better for a city on foot than for sitting outside.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
