Where they differ
Stuttgart is the one for open country: 51% of the land around it is protected against 16% around Zurich, and it has about twice as much park space near the centre, plus somewhat more tourist attractions for families. Germany's national daily estimate is €163 against Switzerland's €248.
Zurich concentrates its interest: about twice as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, about twice as many restaurants near it, museums grouped tightly around the middle, and somewhat more bars and clubs.
Where they are alike
Museums and heritage come out level. Both cities give you a full indoor programme for a wet day; Zurich has somewhat more museums and keeps them near the centre, while Stuttgart's heritage argument is 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Zurich's 1.
Evenings are similar too: in both, most bars and clubs sit near the centre, and the range of kitchens is comparable. Neither is a swimming destination, with no month of water at 21°C or more.
Which traveller are you?

A heavily visited city can sit further from its own country's average than these two figures sit from each other, so use it as a frame and check real prices for your dates.
Zurich has many more beaches nearby than Stuttgart, but neither has a month of water at 21°C or more, so those are lakeside spots rather than a swimming season. And both cities' appeal rests on summer: midwinter days sit near 4°C.

Zurich's warm window is the same but wetter: 119-128mm a month across summer against Stuttgart's 63-79mm, and highs stop at 24°C. Its clearest run is early autumn, near 19°C with 87mm; midwinter days sit at 4°C, colder than Stuttgart's 6°C, if you would rather not plan around rain.
