Where they differ
Venice packs about three times as many notable places within walking distance as Zurich, plus 5 UNESCO-listed sites within day-trip reach against 1. Its sea sits at 21°C or more for four months; Zurich has none. The daily estimate is €155 for Italy against €248 for Switzerland.
Zurich has a much wider range of kitchens and somewhat more restaurants near the centre, plus more room outdoors: 16% of the land around it is protected against 4% around Venice, and about three times the park space near the centre.
Where they are alike
Both are cold in January, with highs of 8°C in Venice and 4°C in Zurich, and both warm along the same curve, peaking at 30°C and 24°C in high summer. Neither works as a winter-sun trip.
On museums the two are close: Zurich has somewhat more of them, while Venice's sit more tightly around the centre. Nightlife follows a similar shape if not scale, with most drinking places central in both.

What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €155 and €248, are national estimates for Italy and Switzerland, price levels for restaurants and hotels rather than measurements of Venice or Zurich. A heavily visited city can sit a long way from its own country's average, in either direction, so treat the gap as a rough guide to the two countries and not as evidence of what either city will cost you.
Beach counts also flatter Zurich: it has more of them nearby than Venice, but no month with water at 21°C or more, so the swimming seasons are not comparable. And Venice's warmest months are not its driest.
When should you go?

Venice peaks from May to September, with daytime highs of 24-30°C and a sea warm enough for swimming from June onwards. The later part of that window turns wet, up to 106mm, so the earlier months suit walking around the city better.
Zurich's warmest months are July and August at 24°C, but they are also its wettest, at 119-126mm, so plan indoor options. September is drier at 87mm and still 19°C, which makes it the steadier choice for time outdoors.
