Where they differ

Verona suits families better: many more tourist attractions near the centre, somewhat more park space, and 4 theme parks within reach against Zurich's 2. It also runs warmer all year, with daytime highs of 7-30°C against 4-24°C. Italy's national daily budget estimate is €155, Switzerland's €248.

Zurich has about twice as many restaurants near the centre and a far wider range of kitchens. It also has about twice as many places to drink and many times as many nightclubs, most of them near the centre.

Where they are alike

Museums and heritage come out level. Zurich has about three times as many museums; Verona's sit more tightly around the centre, with 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Zurich's 1.

They are close too on day trips and on how compact the centre feels: 16% of the land around Zurich is protected against 9% around Verona, Verona has a little more park space near the centre, and both keep their notable places within walking distance.

Which traveller are you?

Families with children: Verona. Far more tourist attractions sit near the centre, park space is somewhat greater, and there are 4 theme parks within reach against Zurich's 2, with warmer days for being outdoors.

Anyone building a trip around eating and late evenings: Zurich, with about twice as many restaurants near the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, twice as many places to drink and many more nightclubs.

Heritage travellers who want a day out of the city: Verona, with 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Zurich's 1 and museums clustered close together. Zurich answers with more museums and more protected land around it.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures are national, €155 for Italy and €248 for Switzerland, price levels for restaurants and hotels rather than measurements of Verona or Zurich. A heavily visited city can sit a long way from its own country's average, further than the gap between the two countries, so treat them as background rather than as what your trip will cost.

Zurich's strongest months are also its wettest, close to 126mm in July, so the beaches counted around the city come with a real chance of rain. Neither city has a month of water at 21°C or more, so swimming is incidental in both.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
