The verdict

Choose Antwerp if you want the city itself to be the trip: far more restaurants near the centre, a wider range of kitchens, more museums and more to do after dark. It is the warmer of the two, reaching 23°C in July.

Choose Bath if you want countryside within easy reach and a quieter, smaller centre, with 28% of the surrounding land protected.

Where they differ

Antwerp has many times as many restaurants near the centre, and a much wider range of kitchens. It has about twice as many museums, with 9 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Bath's 2, and after dark the gap widens: about three times as many places to drink and many times as many nightclubs.

Bath's advantage lies outside the city: a far larger share of the surrounding land is protected, so countryside walking starts close to the door. Antwerp keeps somewhat more park space near its own centre.

Where they are alike

Weather is the closest call. Both open and close the year at 7°C, both peak in July, and neither has a month at 40mm of rain or less.

Neither is a swimming trip: each has one beach nearby and no month with the sea warm enough to tempt you in. For families they are close too, with much the same number of attractions near the centre, and Antwerp holding a small edge on theme parks.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone travelling to eat and drink should go to Antwerp: many times more restaurants near the centre, a far wider spread of kitchens, and roughly three times as many places to drink, most of them within walking distance.

Walkers, and anyone who wants to be out of town by mid-morning, are better served by Bath, where much more of the surrounding land is protected and days out lean on countryside rather than city sights.

For a family weekend Antwerp edges it: 3 theme parks within reach against Bath's 1, more park space near the centre, and about three times as many notable places within walking distance for wet days.

What the numbers don't tell you

There is a daily budget figure for Antwerp, around €180, and none at all for Bath, so the two cannot be compared on cost here. Read the value axis as built on something both cities do have, not as a price tag, and check accommodation yourself.

A beach nearby counts for little when neither city has a month with the sea at 21°C or more, so treat that as a walk by the water rather than swimming. And Antwerp's warmest months are also its wettest, 90mm in August, so a good month on paper still needs a raincoat.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Antwerp: 1991-2020 normals, Antwerpen / Deurne (5.2 km from centre). Bath: 1991-2020 normals, Lyneham (29.2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Antwerp is the warmer city through spring and early autumn: May reaches 19°C against Bath's 16°C, and October is drier, 71mm against 87mm. It is the better pick in the shoulder months if warmth is the priority.

Bath answers in high summer, when it is the drier of the two: 61mm in July against Antwerp's 80mm, at highs of 21°C rather than anything hotter. Winter suits neither city, wet at both ends of the year and 7°C in January.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
