The verdict

Choose Antwerp if the trip is built around museums and evenings out: it has the deeper museum stock, 9 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and far more bars and clubs near the centre.

Choose Strasbourg if you want green surroundings and warmer summer days: much of the land around it is protected, its central parks are larger, and summer highs reach 26°C.

Where they differ

Antwerp is the stronger city for museums, with about twice as many as Strasbourg, and for evenings out: roughly three times as many places to drink, and many times as many nightclubs, with most of both close to the centre.

Strasbourg's strength is what surrounds it. 37% of the land around the city is protected against 7% around Antwerp, and its central parks are larger, so a day spent outdoors takes less planning and less travelling to reach.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Strasbourg has 9 beaches within reach against Antwerp's 1, but neither has water warm enough to swim in, so water here is scenery rather than a plan.

Both are compact enough to cover on foot, with the notable places clustered near the centre and Strasbourg holding slightly more of them. Eating out is comparable too, Antwerp with somewhat more restaurants close in and a wider range of kitchens.

Which traveller are you?

Museum-goers who want the evening to continue afterwards should take Antwerp: twice the museum stock, and bars and clubs concentrated near the centre rather than scattered across the city.

Walkers and day-trippers are better served by Strasbourg, where most of the surrounding land is protected and the central parks are larger, with the notable places close enough together to link on foot.

Families with children who tire of walking will find more to do in Antwerp, with about twice as many attractions near the centre and 3 theme parks within reach against Strasbourg's 1, though Strasbourg's larger parks give more room to run.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €180 for Belgium and €160 for France, are national estimates of what restaurants and hotels cost, not measurements of Antwerp or Strasbourg. A heavily visited city can sit far enough from its own country's average to swallow a gap this small, so treat them as background rather than a reason to choose.

Strasbourg's drier record is real but awkwardly timed: the months at 40mm or less are the coldest ones, with highs of 5-12°C, while the wettest falls in the middle of the travelling season. And although it has more beaches nearby, neither city offers water warm enough to swim in.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Antwerp: 1991-2020 normals, Antwerpen / Deurne (5.2 km from centre). Strasbourg: 1991-2020 normals, Strasbourg (9.1 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Antwerp's usable window is June to August, with highs of 21-23°C, though rain peaks then too, at 80-90mm in the two summer months. September is milder at 20°C and slightly drier.

Strasbourg runs warmer through the same window, 24-26°C, and its dry stretch comes earlier: 34-42mm from February to April, against Antwerp's driest at 47mm. May is the exception, at 77mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
