Where they differ

Avignon is the better base for heritage beyond the city, with 6 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Strasbourg's 1, and it has more tourist attractions near the centre plus 4 theme parks within reach against Strasbourg's 1.

Strasbourg has about twice as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, about three times as many places to drink, and about three times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination: neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, and a summer trip to either is built around the city and the land around it rather than the coast.

They are also close on nature and on families. Just over a third of the land around each city is protected, 36% by Avignon and 37% by Strasbourg, and both make moderate family trips, one leaning on attractions, the other on parks.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone travelling to eat well and go out afterwards should pick Strasbourg: far more restaurants near the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, and considerably more places to drink, most of them walkable.

A heritage traveller willing to drive is better served by Avignon, which has 6 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Strasbourg's 1, even though Strasbourg holds somewhat more museums in the city itself.

Families face a closer call. Avignon has more tourist attractions near the centre and 4 theme parks within reach against Strasbourg's 1, while Strasbourg has far more park space for unplanned days.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value comparison between these two carries no information: both are priced off the same national figure, so nothing here says one is cheaper. The €160 a day beside them is a national estimate, not a measurement of either city.

Beach counts mislead here too. Strasbourg has more beaches nearby, but neither city is on the coast and neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more. Nor are the warm months the dry ones: Avignon's September stays warm while being its wettest, at 111mm, so a shoulder-season trip chosen on temperature alone can be a wet one.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Avignon: 1991-2020 normals, Nimes / Courbessac (34 km from centre). Strasbourg: 1991-2020 normals, Strasbourg (9.1 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Avignon is at its best in May and June, when highs run 24-28°C and rainfall sits at 44-58mm. Midsummer is hotter and drier still, at 31°C, if you can take the heat. September stays warm but turns wet, at 111mm, and the autumn is wet.

Strasbourg's window is narrower: June to August, at 24-26°C, is the only reliably warm stretch, and it is also when most of the rain falls. Spring is drier, closer to 40mm a month, and winter is cold, falling to 5-7°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
