Where they differ

Barcelona puts the sea within the day: 20 beaches nearby against Milan's 4, and three months when the water sits at 21°C or above, which Milan has no equivalent of. It also has about twice as many restaurants near the centre and a far wider spread of kitchens, so eating out can carry the whole trip.

Milan is the greener base: 30% of the surrounding land is protected against 10% around Barcelona, and there is roughly twice as much park space close to the centre.

Where they are alike

Both cities put a comparable number of notable places within walking distance of the centre, so in each you can spend days on foot without needing transport to reach the next thing.

Their museum offerings are close too: Barcelona has somewhat more museums, Milan's sit more tightly around the centre, and Milan counts 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Barcelona's 3. What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures are national estimates for Spain and Italy, covering restaurant and hotel price levels rather than either city. A capital or heavily visited city can sit well above its own country's average, by more than the gap between €122 and €155, so treat the two as roughly indistinguishable rather than as evidence about costs on the ground.

Barcelona's beaches count for most exactly when everyone else thinks so: the sea only reaches 21°C from June, in the same months the city is at its hottest. And the warm end of Milan's year carries real rain, 83mm in August.
