The verdict
Choose Belgrade if you want a compact, warmer city break, with more park space near the centre, nightclubs concentrated where you will be staying, and shoulder months that stay mild into October.
Choose Vienna if museums and heritage are the reason for the trip, with several times Belgrade's museum count, UNESCO-listed sites within day-trip reach, and far more for families, including theme parks.

Where they differ
Belgrade has about twice as much park space near the centre, and a slightly larger share of protected land around it. Its nightclubs outnumber Vienna's and sit mostly near the centre, where half of Vienna's are further out. Serbia's estimated daily budget is €99 against Austria's €160.
Vienna has about three times as many museums, plus 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach where Belgrade has none. For families there are far more attractions near the centre and 4 theme parks against 1, and a wider range of kitchens.
Where they are alike
Neither is a place to swim in the sea. Vienna has 22 beaches nearby and Belgrade 9, but neither has a month of water at 21°C or more, so swimming is incidental rather than a reason to go.
Otherwise both are inland cities with cold winters and warm summers, winter highs near 5°C and 3°C. Protected land is limited around both, and each keeps its main sights within walking distance of the centre.
Which traveller are you?
A museum-led traveller should take Vienna: several times Belgrade's museum count, 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and about twice as many notable sights within walking distance of the centre.
Anyone travelling for nights out will find Belgrade simpler: more nightclubs than Vienna, and nearly all of them near the centre, so an evening needs little planning. Vienna has more bars, but half sit outside the middle.
Families are better served in Vienna, with far more attractions near the centre and 4 theme parks within reach against 1, though Belgrade's larger central park space suits younger children.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €99 for Serbia and €160 for Austria, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of Belgrade or Vienna. A capital or a heavily visited city can sit further from its own country's average than these two countries sit from each other, so treat them as background rather than a guide to either trip.
Summer looks best on the monthly data, but those same months carry the heat and most of the rain: Belgrade reaches 30°C at its peak, and its early-summer rainfall tops 95mm. Warm does not mean dry.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Belgrade: 1991-2020 normals, Beograd (2.1 km from centre). Vienna: 1991-2020 normals, Wien / Hohe Warte (4.7 km from centre).
Belgrade holds the shoulder months better: 24°C in September against Vienna's 21°C, and it stays milder into October. June is its wettest month, at 95mm.
Vienna suits high summer, when 25-27°C is easier going than Belgrade's 30°C peak, though rain runs 70-78mm across those months. It also has the one month drier than 40mm, in cold February.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
