The verdict

Choose Bled if the trip is mainly about the outdoors: a fifth of the surrounding land is protected, there are 3 beaches on the lake, and a theme park within reach if you have children.

Choose Siena if you would rather walk a compact historic centre, with far more museums standing close together, many more notable buildings within walking distance, and a wider choice of places to eat and drink.

Where they differ

Bled's advantage is what surrounds it. Around 20% of the land nearby is protected against 3% around Siena, it has 3 beaches on the lake where Siena has none, and 1 theme park within reach.

Siena is the stronger town-centre visit: roughly three times as many museums, sitting tightly around the middle, and 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Bled's 3. Many more notable buildings stand within walking distance, and there are considerably more places to eat and to drink near the centre.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Bled has 3 beaches on its lake and Siena has none, and neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more, so a swim is incidental rather than a reason to book.

Both also sit in countries with mid-range estimated daily budgets, €131 and €155, and both follow the same seasonal shape: warm summers, cool and damp winters, with the year's highest temperatures arriving in July in each case.

Which traveller are you?

Someone travelling for museums and old buildings should take Siena: roughly three times as many museums, clustered close together, and 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, so days need little planning and little transport between them.

Walkers and day-trippers are better served by Bled, where 20% of the surrounding land is protected against 3% around Siena, and the beaches on the lake give an easy swim at the end of a hike.

Families can go either way. Siena has about twice as many attractions near the centre and more park space close in; Bled has the lake beaches and a theme park within reach, which Siena lacks.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €131 and €155, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A small lake resort and a walled town can each sit well away from their national average, by more than the gap between the two, so this says nothing about which trip costs more.

The weather comparison is incomplete: no station near Siena records sunshine hours, so that figure is missing rather than low, and its monthly picture rests on temperature and rainfall alone. Bled's warmest months are also its wettest, so a strong summer rating there does not promise dry days.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bled: 1991-2020 normals, Klagenfurt (35.5 km from centre). Siena: 2006-2017 (rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Arezzo (45 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Bled is at its best from June to September, with midsummer highs of 25-27°C. Those same months are also its wettest, 108-139mm, so showers will shape some afternoons and plans around the lake need slack in them.

Siena suits May and June, with highs of 23-28°C, and again September, warm but wet at 103mm. Midsummer is its driest stretch at 49-53mm, though highs reach 31°C, which is hot work in a stone-built centre with little shade.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
