The verdict
Choose Bordeaux if your trip is built around museums, heritage and long evenings out; it has far more of both, and more protected countryside within day-trip reach.
Choose Montpellier if you want swimming and a warmer, drier year: 8 beaches nearby, sea reaching 22°C in August, and a summer that stays close to dry.

Where they differ
Bordeaux is the stronger city for museums, with about three times as many as Montpellier and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Montpellier's 2, clustered tightly around the centre. It also has roughly twice as many places to drink, plus more nightclubs, and the countryside around it is far more heavily protected.
Montpellier answers with the coast: 8 beaches nearby against Bordeaux's 4, and sea at 21°C or more in high summer, where Bordeaux has no swimming season at all. It also has more park space near the centre.
Where they are alike
For families the two land in much the same place by different routes: Bordeaux concentrates tourist attractions near the centre, Montpellier offers more park space and theme parks within reach.
Eating out is comparable, with a similar range of kitchens and only somewhat more restaurants near the centre in Bordeaux. Both are compact: notable places sit within walking distance of the centre, and in both the bars and clubs cluster close in.
Which traveller are you?
Someone travelling for museums and older architecture should pick Bordeaux: about three times the museums, 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and enough of them close to the centre to walk between.
Families with swimming in mind are better served by Montpellier: 8 beaches nearby, 7 theme parks within reach against Bordeaux's 1, and more park space close to the centre for slow days.
Anyone planning late nights and days out in open country should choose Bordeaux, which has far more bars and clubs and a much larger share of protected land around it.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value comparison between these two carries no information: it is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so neither is the cheaper trip on this evidence. The €160 a day beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city.
Montpellier's coastal advantage is thinner than it looks. The beaches are nearby rather than in the city, the sea only passes 21°C at the height of summer, and the swimming season runs straight into the wettest stretch of the year, 88mm and 93mm in September and October, when the water is still warm.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bordeaux: 1991-2020 normals, Bordeaux / Merignac (9.5 km from centre). Montpellier: 1991-2020 normals, Montpellier (7.8 km from centre).
Bordeaux is at its best from June to September, with highs of 25-28°C and July its driest month at 47mm. Late autumn is the stretch to avoid, with 114mm in November and 107mm in December and highs near 11°C.
Montpellier's window is wider and drier. June and July bring highs of 27-30°C with just 17mm in July, and the sea reaches 22°C in August. September and October are the wet months, 88mm and 93mm, and winter stays slightly milder at 12-13°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
