Where they differ
Bratislava runs slightly warmer through the year, 3-27°C against 4-25°C, and the national daily estimate for its country is €132 against €163 for Munich's. Its nightlife is also more concentrated, with most drinking places near the centre.
Munich is stronger for eating out, with about twice as many restaurants near the centre and a wider range of kitchens, and much the better choice with children: far more attractions near the centre, more park space, and 2 theme parks within reach against 1.
Where they are alike
Museums and heritage land in the same place. Munich has somewhat more museums, while Bratislava counts 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Munich's 1, so a trip built around history works from either base.
Both are inland cities with no sea to plan around, and both keep their notable sights within walking distance of the centre, Munich with somewhat more. The yearly pattern of weather is close as well: winter highs of 3-4°C and summer peaks of 25-27°C.
Which traveller are you?
Families: Munich. There are far more attractions near the centre than in Bratislava, more park space to break up the day, and 2 theme parks within reach against 1, which matters over a week with children.
Eating and going out: Munich again, with about twice the restaurant choice near the centre and a wider spread of kitchens. Bratislava suits anyone who wants the evening on foot, since most of its bars cluster centrally.
A summer city break on a set budget: Bratislava, warmer at 27°C in July, drier through the season, and backed by the lower national price estimate of the two countries.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget is one national estimate per country, a price level for restaurants and hotels rather than a measurement of either city. A capital or a heavily visited city can sit further from its own national average than the two figures sit from each other, so neither city can be called the cheaper trip on that evidence.
Bratislava's 36 nearby beaches are inland water, and neither city has a month at 21°C or more. Its warmer summer is also among its wetter seasons, so warmth is not a promise of dry days. In Munich, only about half the drinking places are central, so evenings can mean more travel.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bratislava: 1991-2020 normals, Bratislava Ivanka (8.6 km from centre). Munich: 1991-2020 normals, München (1.9 km from centre).
Bratislava suits a summer trip. June to August gives highs of 25-27°C with 70-80mm of rain a month, and 22°C holds into September, the last comfortable month before it cools quickly. Spring is the drier of the two.
Munich's warmest months are also its wettest. July and August reach 25°C but bring 117-119mm, far more than Bratislava's. September is the steadier bet, 20°C on 78mm, and the better month if you would rather not plan around rain.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
