What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €132 and €138, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either city. A capital and a heavily visited coastal town can each sit far from their country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so read them as country context rather than as a reason to choose.
No weather station near Zadar records sunshine hours, so that side of the weather comparison is unmeasured rather than poor, and its monthly picture rests on temperature, rainfall and sea alone. Its warmest, driest months are also when its beaches are busiest.

Zadar's usable stretch is longer. June pairs 28°C with sea at 22°C and 49mm of rain; July is drier still at 25mm. September keeps the sea warm but the rain returns, so late spring reads better than early autumn.
