The verdict
Choose Bruges if you want a compact town trip: more restaurants and more to see near the centre, more park space and attractions for children, and a gentler summer topping out near 22°C.
Choose Heidelberg if the country around matters more than the streets: 52% of the land around it is protected, and summers run warmer, to 26°C.

Where they differ
Bruges has about twice as many restaurants near the centre as Heidelberg, and a wider range of kitchens. It also has about twice as many attractions close in and three times as much park space, which matters most with children along; both have 1 theme park within reach.
Heidelberg's strength lies outside the town: 52% of the land around it is protected against 2% around Bruges, so days out in open country are the trip rather than an addition to it.
Where they are alike
The two sit closest on cost: the national price estimates behind them, €180 for Belgium and €163 for Germany, are near enough that price alone will not settle the choice.
They also match on heritage and layout. Both keep their notable places within walking distance of the centre, both have museum collections and UNESCO-listed sites within day-trip reach, 3 for Bruges and 4 for Heidelberg, and both open the year with January highs of 5-6°C.
Which traveller are you?
Families should take Bruges. About twice as many attractions sit near the centre, alongside roughly three times as much park space, so days can stay short and walkable; each city has 1 theme park within reach.
Walkers and day-trippers should take Heidelberg, where 52% of the surrounding land is protected. That is the difference between a town you look at and a base you leave each morning.
Anyone travelling to eat is better served in Bruges, with roughly twice the restaurants near the centre and somewhat more places to drink. Neither is a late-night city: club numbers are similar and modest in both.
What the numbers don't tell you
The €180 and €163 daily figures are national estimates for Belgium and Germany, the price level for restaurants and hotels countrywide, not a measurement of either city. A heavily visited town can sit far above its own national average, by more than the gap between these two, so the near-parity tells you little.
In both, the warmest months are also among the wettest, so a warm month is not a dry one. Bruges's single month at 40mm or less falls in April, when highs are 13°C. Warm planning and dry planning point at different parts of the year.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bruges: 1991-2020 normals, Vlissingen (37.4 km from centre). Heidelberg: 1991-2020 normals, Heidelberg (4.5 km from centre).
Bruges is at its best in July and August, highs of 22°C and sea at 18-19°C, though these are also its wettest summer months at 74-79mm. April is the driest stretch, 35mm with highs of 13°C, better for walking than swimming.
Heidelberg's warm season is longer: 21°C already in May and again in September, 24-26°C from June to August. July is its wettest at 80mm, and no month drops to 40mm or less, so rain is possible whenever you go.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
