The verdict
Choose Bruges if you want a small city, 119,000 people, that you can cross on foot: its museums sit tightly around the centre and its evenings stay quiet.
Choose London if breadth is the point: far more places to eat, drink and visit, more to do with children, and summer highs near 24°C with less rain than Bruges over the same months.

Where they differ
Bruges keeps everything close. Its museums sit tightly around the centre, most of its bars are on the same short walk, and the nearby beach puts a sea of 19°C in August within reach.
London's advantages are ones of scale: many times as many restaurants near the centre and a somewhat wider range of kitchens, many times as many bars and clubs, and many times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre. It also has 3 theme parks within reach against Bruges's 1.
Where they are alike
Highs run 6-22°C across the year in Bruges and 8-24°C in London: mild summers, cool rather than severe winters. Each has a single month at 40mm of rain or less, so neither offers a reliably dry season.
Swimming is not a reason to choose either; neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more. In both, green space and countryside are a day-trip matter rather than the reason to go.
Which traveller are you?
Someone whose evenings matter, dinner and then a bar or a club, should take London. It has many times as many places to drink and to eat near the centre, and a wider range of kitchens than Bruges holds.
Families lean the same way. London has about twice as many attractions near the centre, more park space and 3 theme parks within reach against Bruges's 1, though Bruges is the easier city to walk with small children.
A traveller who wants museums and old streets without transport should take Bruges. Its museums cluster around the centre, and 3 UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach, one fewer than London's 4, in a far smaller city.
What the numbers don't tell you
No cost comparison is possible here. The dataset gives Bruges a daily budget of about €180 and carries no equivalent figure for London, so nothing in these numbers says which trip is dearer. Read the value axis as a separate measure, not as a price.
Counts of what lies nearby can mislead. The 47 beaches recorded near London are coastline within reach rather than swimming from the city, and neither place has a month with sea at 21°C or more. The 16% of protected land around London likewise sits outside it, reached by train.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bruges: 1991-2020 normals, Vlissingen (37.4 km from centre). London: 1991-2020 normals, London Heathrow Airport (22.5 km from centre).
Bruges is at its best from May to August. April is the driest month at 35mm, May reaches 17°C and June 20°C. August is the warmest at 22°C, with the sea at 19°C, but also the wettest at 79mm.
London's summer is warmer and drier: 22-24°C from June to August with 46-53mm of rain, against 64-79mm in Bruges over the same months. Winter separates them less, though London runs a little warmer at 8°C in January against 6°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
