The verdict
Choose Cape Town if you want the wider range of kitchens and a dry, warm summer, and can accept a sea that never warms past 18°C.
Choose Rio de Janeiro if swimming is the point: sea at 21°C or more in every month, twice the number of beaches, far more parkland near the centre and more for children to do.

Where they differ
Cape Town gives you the wider spread of kitchens, though Rio de Janeiro has somewhat more restaurants near its centre. It is also drier: six of its months come in at 40mm of rain or less, where Rio has none.
Rio de Janeiro has 61 beaches nearby against 29, and sea at 21°C or more in every month of the year. Around it, 21% of the land is protected against 6%, with much more park space near the centre, twice as many tourist attractions, plus a theme park.
Where they are alike
Weather is where they sit closest. Both are warmest in February at 28°C and coolest in July, and neither drops below 18°C in daytime highs at any point, so no month is off-limits.
They are close on nights out and on layout too: much the same number of nightclubs, drinking places concentrated near the centre in both, and notable sights clustered within walking distance of it.
Which traveller are you?
If swimming is the reason you are going, Rio de Janeiro settles it: the sea holds 21°C or more every month and there are 61 beaches nearby, where Cape Town's water stays at 15-18°C.
If eating out drives the trip, Cape Town covers a wider range of kitchens, and its dry summer months make walking between them straightforward, though Rio de Janeiro has more restaurants close to the centre.
Families lean towards Rio de Janeiro: 21% protected land against 6%, much more park space near the centre, twice as many tourist attractions and a theme park within reach.
What the numbers don't tell you
No cost comparison is possible here. The dataset carries no daily budget figure for either city, so nothing on this page tells you what a day costs or which of the two is the lighter spend; the value ranking is built from a different measure entirely.
The weather picture is also incomplete. No sunshine figure exists for Rio de Janeiro, so its monthly ratings rest on temperature, rainfall and sea temperature alone, and that side of the comparison is unmeasured. Note too that Cape Town's driest, warmest months sit beside water at 17-18°C, so a beach count says little about swimming.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Cape Town: 1991-2020 normals, Cape Town Airport (17.5 km from centre). Rio de Janeiro: 2001-2020 normals, NASA POWER reanalysis grid, no weather station within 90 km.
Cape Town is at its best from November to March: highs of 24-28°C and rainfall down at 10-27mm. Its winter is the wet half, with 76-97mm from June to August, when highs sit at 18°C.
Rio de Janeiro is easiest from June to September, its driest stretch at 42-69mm, with highs of 24-25°C and sea at 21-23°C. Its own wet season runs November to January, at 208-232mm, exactly when Cape Town is driest.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
