The verdict

Choose Cologne if you want the bigger city trip: theme parks and attractions for children, more museums, and a much wider choice of bars and clubs, with more protected countryside within reach for days out.

Choose Strasbourg if you prefer a compact centre you can walk, with its notable buildings and museums close together, slightly warmer summers and drier winter months.

Where they differ

Cologne is the stronger choice for families, with 6 theme parks within reach against Strasbourg's 1, many more attractions near the centre and about twice as much park space. Nights out are on another scale, with around three times as many places to drink and far more clubs, and it has about twice as many museums.

Strasbourg concentrates more of its notable places within walking distance of the centre, and its museums sit more tightly around it, so more of a short stay happens on foot.

Where they are alike

Neither is a place to swim. Both sit inland, and neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more, so summer in either is about streets, parks and museums.

They are close elsewhere too. Summer highs reach 25°C in Cologne and 26°C in Strasbourg, and winter stays similar at both. Their national price levels are near identical, and the two offer a similar range of kitchens, with Cologne holding somewhat more restaurants near the centre.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children: Cologne, comfortably. It has 6 theme parks within reach against Strasbourg's 1, far more attractions close to the centre, and roughly twice the park space for days that need somewhere to run.

Out late, then a museum in the morning: Cologne again. It has around three times as many places to drink, many more clubs, and about twice as many museums to work through.

A short trip made on foot: Strasbourg. More of its notable places sit within walking distance of the centre, its museums cluster tightly, and winter months are drier, 34-39mm against Cologne's wetter ones.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €163 for Germany and €160 for France, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A large or heavily visited city can sit further from its own country's average than the two figures sit from each other, so the gap says nothing about which trip costs more.

Beaches read oddly here: 40 are counted near Cologne against a handful near Strasbourg, yet neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more. Cologne's warmest months are also its wettest, so the warmest window is not the dry one.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
