The verdict

Choose Como if you want a town you can walk: many more notable places within reach of the centre than Sorrento, more museums close by, and far more protected land and park space for days out.

Choose Sorrento if the trip is built around water: 78 beaches nearby, and sea at 21°C or more for five months of the year, with drier, warmer summers.

Where they differ

Como concentrates its interest near the centre: about three times as many notable places within walking distance as Sorrento, more museums and more tightly grouped, and 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Sorrento's 5. Around it, 23% of the land is protected, and there is far more park space near the centre.

Sorrento answers with the coast: 78 beaches nearby against Como's 8, and sea at 21°C or more for five months, where Como has none. Its summers are also drier and its winters milder.

Where they are alike

Nightlife is a close match, and modest in both. Como has somewhat more places to drink, Sorrento about twice as many nightclubs, and in both towns most of them sit near the centre, so an evening out stays walkable.

Eating and heritage are close too: much the same number of restaurants near the centre, with Como's kitchens a little more varied, and both back a small museum offering with UNESCO-listed sites within day-trip reach.

Which traveller are you?

If you plan the trip around swimming, Sorrento is the only real answer here: 78 beaches within reach and a sea that holds 21°C or more from June, peaking at 26°C in August.

If you would rather walk between museums and streets, Como suits better: notable places cluster more tightly around its centre, its museums sit closer in, and 8 UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach against Sorrento's 5.

Families should temper expectations in both. Como offers more attractions and park space near the centre, plus more protected land around it for days out; Sorrento's counterweight is a single theme park within reach.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value figure is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so comparing them on it carries no information. The €155 a day beside it is one national estimate, not a measurement of either town, and costs in peak summer against midwinter can sit far from it.

Sorrento's beach count reflects a long stretch of coast within reach, not space on it, and its driest, warmest months fall on a town of 15,400 people, so the peak concentrates into a small place. Como's warmest months are also its wettest, at 158-172mm through the summer, so its best window is a warm one rather than a dry one.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
