The verdict

Choose Florence if museums and heritage are the point of the trip, if you want a centre you can cover on foot, and if you want warmth: August highs reach 33°C.

Choose Zurich if you'd rather have the wider choice of kitchens, lake beaches within reach, more protected land around the city, and summers that top out near 24°C.

Where they differ

Florence has about twice as many museums as Zurich, clustered tightly around the centre, with 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Zurich's 1. It also has about twice as many notable places within walking distance, plus more tourist attractions and more park space near the centre. Italy's national daily estimate is €155 against Switzerland's €248.

Zurich covers a much wider range of kitchens, has 23 beaches nearby where Florence has none, and 2 theme parks within reach.

Where they are alike

Neither city is a swimming destination. Zurich has lake beaches, Florence none, but neither has a month with water at 21°C or more, so a swim is incidental.

Day trips are similarly limited from both, each with a modest share of protected land nearby. Nightlife is close as well: Florence has somewhat more places to drink, Zurich about twice as many nightclubs, and in both they sit near the centre.

Which traveller are you?

A traveller coming for art and history should pick Florence: about twice as many museums as Zurich, 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against one, and most of it walkable from the centre.

Families are split. Florence puts more attractions and park space within walking distance of the centre, which suits short days with children; Zurich has 2 theme parks within reach and beaches on the lake.

Someone travelling to eat and go out will find Zurich's range of kitchens wider and its club scene deeper, while Florence offers more places to drink near the centre and a shorter walk back.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures are national estimates of restaurant and hotel prices, €155 for Italy and €248 for Switzerland, not measurements of Florence or Zurich. A heavily visited city can sit a long way from its own country's average, so treat the gap as a rough indication of price level, not a per-day forecast for either trip.

Florence's strongest months are also its hottest and its driest: August at 33°C. Its milder autumn brings the heaviest rain. In Zurich the warmest months are the wettest, so a warm month is not a dry one.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
